Pre 1940s Stetson Westerns

View attachment 393572 Number one quality. It had a leather band around it which I removed due to some signs of corrosion which was getting on the ribbon. I then treated the ribbon and leather band to remove the green. I also hydrated the leather band and I think I am going to retire it for now. It’s sitting nicely in a display case. It’s a large hat! I looked through my 1923 catalogue and found a hat that closely fits the description of this fine western

Recently received this one in the mail all the way from Sweden. Originally purchased in New York, this it’s a really nice nutria quality western that has withstood the test of time. There’s a small moth nibble that goes unnoticed due to the striking build of this hat. Based on what I could find, I think this hat very much resembles a “San An” . The original box has a Swedish customs sticker dated 1938. Price tag in the hat is $13.00

+1, another unreal condition No. 1!
Thanks guys! I feel a little crazy acquiring all of these in such a short time. I'd suspect that typically these finds/buys take time. Regardless, I'm beyond happy to have these and even happier to wear them out!

I had to come back for more looks (and edit my post since I incorrectly called this a #1). I really like the look of this one. The ‘modest’ western dimensions really look great on you and suits the bash you currently have. The shallow flange looks like it may be a snappable brim? Another interesting wide panel tag too, and a lower LOT!

All good on the mess up- I knew what you meant. Thanks Ross!! I do like the profile of this one a bunch. The bash seems to have been this way for a while judging by the definition of the crease when popped out. I have no intentions of changing it either! Gotta keep that crown nice and tall haha! You know, I haven't tried to snap it yet. Interesting point!
Now that thar's a hat!
Thanks partner!
Awesome, awesome hat.
Thanks Daniel!
You are on a roll Jesse! Killer western in amazing condition. Did you find @alanfgag 's time portal?
Just trying to catch up to all of you!! Thanks BH! ya know, I've been digging through as many threads as I can. I referenced the Miller Stockman thread and zooming through convos in the threads. Any recommendations on specific threads that would be of use? I can spend all day on here absorbing all this info!
@alanfgag would appreciate your expertise on this current nutria referenced above as well as this No.1 (LOT # and tags on post 304&306) if possible!

A couple of great hats… thanks for tagging me as I haven’t had as much time to visit as I’d like. Great that you have a customs stamp for the nutria quality to add context to the LOTXXXX number, which I would have placed in the later 1930s from the sequence, rondel imprint and gold keyhole size tag. I believe nutria quality was a modest price point, below the cost of No.1 quality, but my grade memory might be rusty. Really lovely hats n lovely condition. Wear the with pride and joy.

Alan, thank you for taking some time to check them out and confirming some speculations! I just found a page in this forum where you mentioned LOT # dating. A huge help along with this. Hope you are doing well and again, many thanks! Happy to have your approval!

That could have been in a time capsule. Just fabulous condition and looks good on the noggin shot. I'm jealous of westerns like that. Modern ones I've handled lately are so far from the old nearly crushable felf that I have handled in my old no-name western. Just love seeing a gem like that. Looks great.

Wonderful, wonderful hat, Greg.
I believe that Lot number may be the second lowest number around here.
B

what a great hat, BB! I don't recall such an early lot # either. Wow!
Thanks, guys. I've done a lot of looking through the Lot # thread to see the hats but I've never paid much attention to the numbers. Guess I need to do some reading. I have another No. 1 with a lot # in the 3XXX's so, knowing this hat was an earlier one was the extent of my knowledge.
