I'm not able to view the embedded videos in these threads due to the age of my computer, so I'll just ask that people be careful not to post material that isn't in harmony with established Lounge standards. And please keep posts in line with material that has definite roots in the Era: no acid rock, no psychedelic rock, no hippy-dippy stuff, no punk, no heavy metal, no rap. Here's one of Allen Toussaint's productions from 1961. Lee Dorsey had been singing for a while, with little success (he still had his auto-body shop as a full-time job), when he signed with Fury records in 1961, and went into the studio with Mr Toussaint producing. Here is the first of a great run of hits for the pair.....

Billy Stewart was a unique talent. I've never heard anyone, before or since, come close to his style. He recorded three inimitable singles between 1965 and 1967. Here is the middle one - arguably the best one.....

Billy, sadly, died in a car accident in 1970. Ford Motor Company were sued, and settled out of court.

All of you "vintage" blues lovers will remember the greatest of the blues balladeers, Bobby Blue Bland. He died on June 23 in Memphis at age 83. I posted it in "Notable Passings," and thought it needed to be marked here as well, along with his signature song, Stormy Monday. Although T-Bone Walker wrote the song in the late 1940s and was the original artist, Bobby took the song and made it his own.

I posted this in another thread, but think it deserves a listen to in this thread. Here is the great Little Walter with his first hit in 1952, Juke. He had recorded this instrumental earlier in Chicago before he went back on the road with Muddy Waters.

The band was in Louisiana, I believe, when Juke came on the radio in the car while the band was driving between gigs. Muddy said, "The next thing you know, you look up and Walter was gone." He had gone back to Chicago to pursue his solo career of touring and recording with the Chess brothers. He rode high on the charts for a number of years with a bunch of number one hits in the blues market. Walter actually eclipsed his former boss--Muddy--and is the only one I can think of who did so back in the50s and 60s.

Well, if Muddy lost his harp player, who was so essential to his sound, one might ask, who replaced him? The easy answer is Junior Wells. When Walter went to Chicago, he persuaded the Aces, Louis and Dave Meyers, and Freddy Back Beat Below, to join him and tour behind his hugh hit, Juke. The problem was that the Aces had been working with Jr. Wells, doing mostly local shows.

I never got it straight which happened first, Jr. Wells left the Aces to go with Muddy or Walter stole the Aces, and Jr. then went with Muddy. Probably should have gotten this straightened out back in the early to mid 70s when most of the musicians from that era were still alive, and I knew some of them. Jr. would never have given me the straight story, but Muddy, or some of the other musicians from that period may have remembered. It's too late now to get it cleaned up.
