Thank you HH - yes that's just ~ 2 years of normal wear & usage. The horizontal creases are pretty common with the Horween FQHH; if you sit in a car, these do develop. I have worn it a lot, through several rains, and even around the house during the summer inside. But nothing else, no aging techniques, etc. It seems specific to this batch of leather, I do not normally see this much development in 2 years.

No more cross zips for me. I simply don’t wear them enough. Of course I’ve been tempted by BL 4. But I won’t.

That last one was a gift from a member here. Had no idea it was coming. Just showed up on my porch one day. It is indeed one of my favorites. Horsehide, old, no labels!

There are some deals to be had on these, although the name "Just Leather" makes it tricky to search for them. That may be a benefit to you, price-wise.

I'll open this up to the broader community here. I have the budget this fall to add one more - up to ~ $1500 for a new one (or two pre-owned for up to $750 a piece). I really do not want to go beyond this, as they simply do not see enough use if I do. If I buy a new one (preffered) it will get the kind of break-in and usage that the Indian Ranger has seen - ideally. Needs to be usable and somewhat practical.

So -- What would you all suggest? Maybe this will get interesting...

I prefer zippers to buttons. I also would not prefer any type of bomber jacket (elastic waist bands and wrist bands). i have several pairs of brown boots. I am not set on any "one" brand, or type. It can be a more conservative model, or a little more wild. I am pretty open. So what do you all think? Have some fun with this one..

How about something like a standard cuffed sheene? You’ve got zippers and m/c styles covered and I know you are not a fan of HB’s. A sheene with HWM style cuffs and a slanted chest pocket like a bootlegger would be very cool. Simple and elegant. A daily driver for sure and different from what you already have. With Aeros current promo and the subtle price reduction the price on a new Aero is historically low.

A new jacket has been added to my collection with the Cockpit WWII Government Issue A-2 jacket, size 38. This A2 jacket is made of russet full grain horsehide leather and made in the USA.

I went for Cockpit as I was looking for a classic A2, russet, and their jackets are still reasonably priced in France (695 euros with no discount) ; which is getting rarer and rarer for the US made jackets, because of the inflation and of the crazy $/€ rate this day. I've noticed for instance that the Schott US jackets prices have taken around 20% in about 2 years in France !!

The shop where I bought this Cockpit A2 informed me that I was lucky to get it at this price as the next Cockpit shipment they will receive will be much more expensive.

I bought it 38 as it is my true size.

The leather is very fine quality, not the heaviest or sturdiest kind, but solid enough to last longer than I will ! Good light graining, with a few slight scars but nothing really bad. The russet/brown color is nice enough. At first, it looks like some boring brown, but the more you look at it, the more you can see some interesting red nuances, announcing that this leather will mature in an beautiful way.

It should be noticed that on Cockpit's website, they show a tag saying "genuine american horsehide". On my jacket, the jacket shows "genuine horsehide" only. So I guess that on the more recent versions of this jacket, the leather is from... who knows where !

The leather has a rather pleasant smell. But it still has some sort a chemical smell in it that is not very pleasant. I've kept the jacket in the room where i slept tonight, and woke up with a slight headache... The jacket is very new and i guess the smell will be reduced as time goes by, but well...

the knitting is OK, nothing crazy but mostly clean and robust. The coton/poly lining (complete, even in the sleeves) is very good and confortable. Seems very breathable to me.

For the sake of comparison, I've compared it with my beloved Schott 674 from the 2010s.

Shoulder to shoulder : Schott : 18 inches ; Cockpit : 20 inches

Well, 18 inches is the perfect shoulder to shoulder size for me, not too tight, not too wide, confortable. More than that on a 38 sized jacket is to me clearly oversized. I have a few deliberately oversized jackets ; some of them with 19 inches (the classic suede bomber Schott 327 in 38), and a single example of 20 inches (a medium Levi's Vintage Clothing blue bomber jacket, wich handle its oversizing very well). So Cockpit deliberatley choses the falling shoulders look...

Sleeve length, not including the knitted cuffs : Schott 24 inches ; Cockpit : 22 inches.

The cockpit compensates the oversizing of the shoulders by shortening the sleeves, which is the reasonable thing to do.

Back length (not including the collar, including the knitted waistband) : Schott 25 inches ; Cockpit 24 inches

Reasonable length in both cases, for my 183 cm height, both length work OK for me.

Pit to pit Schott 23 inches ; Cockpit 23 inches.

This is a tie ! 23 inches may seem oversized for a 38 jacket, but to me, for a leather jacket, it's very good, confortable, you can wear anything under it. 22 inches is fine, 21 inches become tight, maybe unconfortable with a sturdy leather. Under 21 inches is crazy tight and unpleasant for me... So 23 inches, very fine for a confortable winter jacket.

So, this A2 chooses an oversized look and compensate it with short sleeves. I don't mind this look as a principle, I much more worry about the supertight fits which can be really unpleasant to wear. But you will NOT look like Steve McQueen and his classicly fitted A2 in "The great escape" wearing this Cockpit Jacket !

How will it grow on me ? We shall see !

Many thanks for the kind words. I have a long odyssey behind me and this is what's left of Leather Jackets (8). At the moment I'm very happy with this stock. The number and the different Types of Jackets is also perfect for me. I'm overwhelmed with more Jackets. I didn't actually have many vintage Leather Jackets, just two Bucos a 1948 J21 and a 1951 J65 (which I sold through this forum). I'm not that into vintage when it comes to Leather Jackets because I really enjoy and appreciate the break in process for a new Jacket... a Leather Jacket adapts over time like a second Skin, which is unfortunately not the case with used vintage Leather Jackets. The same applies to shoes/boots...

beautiful collection. Love the variety. All fits are superb. The 2nd Thedi, the reddish brown for me is top of the top.
