Viperman - Great VS!

Today my Adam Regent Boater turned up, it has a slightly grimy pug instead of a ribbon so I'll need to do something about that not sure about age yet. It was advertised as a 7 3/8 turned out to be a 7 1/2. Doesn't fit too bad though.

Haven't got the courage to post a head shot yet...

Thanks, Billy. I love that boater. I have had some luck cleaning pugs by soaking them in the sink over night with woolite and cold water. If you do try it, check the color fastness first. Woolite should be safe but you never know. [huh]

Mallory Aristocrat

Received this Mallory Aristocrat level hat today. It appears to be never worn but does have some mothing issues. Got it cheap enough from ebay that its not worth shipping back. Plus I love the grey color with the teal not-so-thin ribbon.

Still the all caps MALLORY logo, paper size tag, and an $8.95 price tag behind sweat. I'm sure Lefty has the exact ad for this hat at that price....;)

Hope you can see the great ribbon color.

rlk seemed to have stumbled for a moment as Buler surged ahead, but now rlk has regained his footing....they're neck and neck, cleaning out the world's antique stores and ebay auctions of vintage hats....

I eagerly check this thread each day, curious what amazing hats you two will turn up next!

Based on price alone, it's a 50s hat. Most 40s Mallory ads show a flat 5 or $10 price. I have very few 50s ads for Mallory, but this 1940 $5 ad looks a little like your hat.

Cavanagh Edge 2-3/4" front brim,2-5/8 other sides. As nice a felt as I have encountered. Unfortunately some moderate moth munches. This store was in the Waldorf-Astoria in NYC from 1931-1956.

It's interesting to see a C&K in a western style. From the few hats and ads I've seen, I wouldn't expect it from them.

This may be the second or third western-style C&K we've seen here on the Lounge. They are very rare. Hat Corp. probably conceded the western market to Stetson, for the most part, I imagine.

What I find most interesting is the marking on the sweatband "A Product of Hat Corporation of America." That was unusual, because through the '40s, Hat Corp. let the brands speak for themselves, and rarely made a big deal out of the parent organization. But around 1953 they started to more prominently associate the brands with the company, and the concept grew even more after the Salesky Bros. got control. Part of this may be a reaction to the crippling strike of '53-'54. The advertising intensified after '56 because the Saleskys were trying to pattern Hat Corp. after General Motors, and equated the various hat division to the car divisions. This is why you see it cropping up in ads after '56: "Cavanagh Hats, a Division of Hat Corporation of America."

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if your C&K dates to around '53-'56, or maybe out to the mid-'60s.

Thanks for posting it!

Brad
