Brand X: What camera did you use to take the shots of your hats, and can you remember the lens, settings, etc.? the shot of the trio on the dresser is very good-nice&sharp, good detail, and very smooth transition to OOF.
All of your shots are good examples of how to shoot a hat ( I use a .12 ga.)
any information would help the Lounge, I'm sure-[huh]

BRANDX, What are the crown heights on your hats? The Sterling Beaver looks a little higher. Is your dark moss VS hat color different than the felt samples? I have samples and my sample looks a little darker with a brown tint.

toobacat, I'm not sure about the crown height, but the Sterling Beaver is slightly higher than the other two. I believe Art lists the Trackside at a 5 1/2" height.

On my calibrated monitor, the Trackside's felt color is exactly as it is in real life. On the swatch card that Art sent, the color appears quite a bit darker and more brown just as you say. So I'd say that if your swatch card is the same as mine and you are interested in a Moss Green VS you are safer to go by the photo's I posted than the felt sample.

ideaguy, I use a Nikon D2Xs and this shot was taken with the NIkkor 28-70mm f/2.8 lens.

I shot aperture priority mode so I chose the f/stop and let the camera vary the shutter speed as the light changed due to clouds passing overhead outside my window. I also shot test frames for each light condition (filtered sunlight and filtered cloudy) with a graycard in the shot so that I could color correct in post for accurate color representation on a calibrated monitor.

I used a shallow DOF by shooting the lens wide open at 2.8 to help isolate the hats and to create a slightly more artistic look to the images rather than true Product-type shots.

The camera was mounted on a tripod due to long shutter speeds......

All in all, it seems to be a well-made hat, so how and when did it sell for $7.50, assuming that's what the name means? If you made me guess right now, I'd date this to about 1950.

That looks like a lot of hat for $7.50. I would guess a bit earlier, but that's just a guess.

New Old Wormser Panama

Hello Loungers,
Here's a find I made right within walking distance of my house in Leesburg, Florida yesterday. An antique store on our Main Street had this and a nice Dobbs felt number in olive green. Anyway, I scored the straw for $24.00 and it seems to be of very good vintage quality. The photos don't show just how dirty it looks but I sort of like that "patina". I used some water and hair dryer to increase the pinch and dents and to get the front brim to stay down. This process cleaned off some surface dust too.
It's marked a 7-1/4 which is two sizes larger than my usual but it runs small after all these years and had some paper stuffing inside the sweat which makes it actually fit me! Yippee.
Very fine weave. Backwoven brim edge. Wind trolley with button stitched in place to bow (?). Dry rotted stitching on sweat band needs re-doing.
Check out the inside tag shots - particularly THE PRICE TAG.
Any info you Panama experts have or opinions about age and brand would be eagerly appreciated...

You honor me, but I am by no means an expert in panama hats, just an aficionado who got the bug for Panamas a while ago then a couple of really great Montecristi fino from Bob, and his hats inspire me to fish for new information on panama hats. The web is a real ocean, it gets you sometimes good catch sometimes a bad catch and the hats reveal the info if you are really attracted to them.
I just own 2 modern Montecristi and 1 more is under way and a Cuenca. All are new production. Therefore I am not an expert in vintage panama hats not to mention the brands that are marketed in the US - I really live in Hungary.

If you look for true experts in matters of panama hats at the FL forum those guys are PanamaBob, (he is dealing with thousands of Montecristi and Cuenca), Vilhat (Fred Belinsky-also a wholesale trader of Panamas) or Art Fawcett (he blocks a lot of panama hats). There are also the collectors of vintage hats.

I would say that the hat is surely not from 1894
and even if it was not sold to you at its original 2,95- the eightfold price is still a fantastic steal.

It is not an extremely high weavecount hat (1600+) - but a very nice one w. even and straight rows, originally uniform color (try to count the weaves with the Montecristi Windows system - cut the 1x1 inch window on a paper hold it against the hat and see how many knots are there horizontally and vertically along the edges of the window then multiply).


It fits you well.

Capelli Ravazzi Stingy Brim

I picked this one up a little over a week ago on e-bay. It was made in Italy, I'm guessing mid 50s to early 60s based on the liner and sweatband. It was full of dust and the fur was pretty matted down. I cleaned it up and flattened the 1 7/8 brim while adding a slight curl as viewed from the front. I added the turkey feathers and Hard Rock Atlanta pin. It turned out to be a pretty fun hat to wear
and looks lie a new one. I've never seen a hat this stingy before that had a wind trolley installed.
