Woke up to a big thrill today. After I went to bed last night I won a auction for what looks to be a really nice 50s Long Oval Royal Stetson. Love the wide brim bindings on these. Cant wait to get it here and on my head

Love those and I think I have one just like it waiting to be cleaned up.

Arrived yesterday.....will be looking into dating it more after i glimpse the blocking tags but place it around 1950 right now. Stetson "Laloo" (they made this model for a very long time); 5 1/2" crown, 3 1/2" brim. REALLY nice felt on this 3X. Came with a kind of "toaster" crease. While interesting I am not sure I am a fan. Will probably lower the bumpers and do a "centerfire" crease like the one I will show at the end.....

Unsewn (taped) sweat seam.....

Roundel 3XB sewn liner (perhaps pre Last Drop for the westerns )

Anyway VERY pleased with this get!:)

Picked up this beater 3X for smoking stogies on the back porch.
Can anyone date this? The maroonish liner is throwing me. Front of sweat reads Stetson Selv-Edge.

The "How to date a stetson by size tag" is one of the few incredibly functional resources here. It posts size tags starting from oldest to youngest and gives dates for when they were used/changed starting right from the top. I don't know if a bartender reorganized it or if someone posted them all in order but it's fantastic.

Two Italian hat manufacturers: one world-renowned Borsalino, the other a contract producer, Vimercati, who, seventy-three years ago, began putting his own name on the hats leaving his workshop.
Vimercati describes itself as follows: "A family-run artisanal firm based in Monza that, since 1953, has transformed felt into exquisite headwear with care and passion. A recipient of a gold medal for exports, the company has always devoted the utmost attention to the creation of its products; its new brand serves as a guarantee of 'Made in Italy' quality, reflecting a commitment to meeting and exceeding the needs of its customers."
Both hats are *lobbie*—known internationally as *homburgs*.
Pomice Borsalino Lobbia 60 C.jpg
The Borsalino is a "voluminous" homburg, characteristic of the style prevalent during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, before such hats became more compact and rounded.
Pomice Borsalino Lobbia 60 B.jpg
Sold abroad, this piece is an excellent example of the vast palette of grays for which Borsalino is famous; the color combinations of the trim are particularly well-chosen.
Pomice Borsalino Lobbia 60 D.jpg
Tne Borsalino is unlined, "waterproof" and and of medium weight
Pomice Borsalino Lobbia 60 Interno.jpg
Both hats are a size 60 centimeters or 7 1/2 in US
Cambiaghi GrigioBlu Lobbia 60 C.jpg
The Vimercati features a shape more typical of the Monza style of homburg.
Cambiaghi GrigioBlu Lobbia 60 B.jpg
Somewhat more streamlined, with a ribbon and trim that contrast against the gray felt, which carries a subtle blue undertone.
Cambiaghi GrigioBlu Lobbia 60 D.jpg
It is a relatively recent piece, yet one that is very much "out of fashion" by today’s standards.

Here are two examples of high-quality Italian hat-making: one has become synonymous with quality, while the other is firmly rooted in the artisanal tradition.
IMPORTANT: Starting next week, hats in various sizes and from different makers will begin appearing in the "Classifieds" section. Keep an eye out!

Two beautiful examples of the elegance of the homburg.

Absolutely love the proportions and colors of that first one!

Stetson Select Quality
Tan felt with brown trim
6 Inch Crown Open (approx 4 3/4 as shaped)
2 3/8 Raw Edge Brim
2 inch Brown Grosgrain Ribbon w/ Frayed Edge
1 7/8 Sweatband with taped rear seam.

This latest arrival came off a much appreciated tip from a friend to its Facebook marketplace place ad. Luckily the seller was willing to ship… so on its way it was. Sold originally at Ruby and Peters Company in Perth Amboy, NJ, it had made its way to only about two hours away in PA…. Now it has traveled down South to its new home in Florida. As I knew from the seller’s photos it was going to need a bit of work to return it to some of its former glory. It had long been settled into one of those very deep center creases that tend to collapse onto itself. So a very heavy brushing and steaming was in order. Considering the proportions of this hat with a 6 inch crown to a 2 3/8 brim, I like to use up some of that generous crown space with a diamond shape crease that reduces the height a bit and gives it a more boxy silhouette I prefer.

The sweatband while holding up fairly well is a bit stiff and brittle, but I took a little risk to try to find any evidence of age under the sweat. I did not find a LotXXX number, but I did find a red three cell hand written manufacturer tag an orange reorder tag along with some hand written notations. Luckily I believe I only managed to burst the taped seam in the process or possibly from stretching it a bit on to my head. Either way… It now fits pretty comfortably. The only issues with the felt are a few slightly larger than quarter sized spots, one on the brim and two on the crown where the felt is somewhat lighter in appearance. I had though maybe fungus a culprit and tried to see what I could get out with a heavier brushing, may have reduced it slightly but it is still there. Might try sanding at some point…. But really it’s nothing too bad for a hat with nearly a century (give or take) of existence.

I’ve got two other Stetson Select Quality… both incredible specimens in my mind. But as wonderful as they are neither of those is in a style I would consider a “Daily wear” kinda hat. This one however fits that bill perfectly…. Color, cut, shape and finish. Absolutely love this one!
