Nice Lock & Co find, Marcel.

For a well established, still in existence hat company, you don't often see them on the market. Well worth buying when one does come up.

Dobbs Game Bird
Charcoal Brown Velour Like Felt
5 1/2 Crown Open (about 4 5/8 as shaped)
1 inch self felted band
2 1/2 brim with rolled underwelt
Embroidered Game Bird Liner

Latest arrival 1950s ear Dobbs Game Bird. The Game Bird is a velvety soft velour like felt with self felted band similar to what you find on the Dobbs Gay Prince minus the whipstitching on the brim and band. The color is very hard to capture in photos.. it’s a dark charcoal to brown color… probably closest to the straight forward shot on the stand (above). Really love the shape and profile.. the blocking is very close to what I have found on my similar era Dobbs Fifteeens. The brim is finished with a slightly rolled underwelt making a sort of “poor man’s” Cavanagh Edge. The Game Bird embroidered liner is very nice touch . The hat also features the Headspring (Comfit) sweatband treatment.

These postings need a bit of an introduction. A large box arrived on my doorstep last week. It contained a kind and extremely generous gift from the north of Italy. Daniele @Daniele Tanto is cleaning up some of his vast collection and found some in my size. Under the ruse of the hats needing work he sent them my way. All most of them needed was the usual steaming, brushing and stretching, but I'm not complaining! So here they are (except for one, which still is on the stretcher).

Cambiaghi heather fedora in brown. Size 56 with the raw edge brim at 6cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. Weighs 113 grams. The unreeded sweatband and the style of crown patch tell us this is a very early one. Perfect for autumn.

We're stepping up a bit (quite a bit really).

Borsalino Erodisti homburg in a grey colour called pomice. Size 56 with the brim at a generous 6,5cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. I had to sew the damaged leather back to the reed, so those with a sensitive disposition in regards to poor needlework, please avert your eyes. Weighs 119 grams. Different in style than the other Borsalino homburg hats with its wider brim and thin brim binding. Very cool hat.

For the final one (for now) I've saved a special one.
Panizza Zeffiro in black. Actually a homburg but because of the rather flat topped crown it resembles a cambridge bowler in style close enough for me to keep it open crown. Size 55 (so needed some stretching) with the bound brim at 6cm and the open crown at 13cm. One of the finest Panizzas I've seen and in pristine condition. Weighs 130 grams.
