1940s Stetson TAR - Mocha/Copper
3 1/2 Telescope “Brick” Crown (approx 5 1/2 open)
3/8 Copper Grosgrain Ribbon
2 7/8 brim with copper binding

One evening last week was about to doze off and the thought crossed my mind to check on the auction for this hat to see what it went for… figuring it had ended already. To my surprise I saw the final seconds were ticking away and threw in a quick winning bid. As TARs go this one ticks some “different” boxes with its telescoped “brick” crown with mule kicks in the front and back… the copper colored grosgrain ribbon and binding as well as that fabric looking reed materIal. In person the felt color is actually a bit darker than the sellers photos… more of a mocha or light chocolate milk coloring which is nice.

But now for the not so nice…. As much as I want too.. I’m not sure if I’m going to take to the crown shape. The telescoped brick shape takes up so much felt we endup with only a 3 1/2 inch crown and with the 2 7/8 brim… it’s all just a lot proportion wise. I will say the photos give it a more flattering look than it appears to my eye. Maybe it’s just me. Next.. in looking at the size/ reorder tags.. which are the red and orange variety.. I quickly saw the size labeled as 6 5/8!!! That’s a far cry from the size 7 listed on the auction. I can only assume it has become somewhat stretched over the years, as miraculously, it some how squeezed onto my head…. rather snuggly. If I go brim up it just looks like a child’s toy cowboy hat squeezed on top of my head… however brim down it is somewhat doable. There were also a few dark stains on the brim and crown that were not visible in the photos…. I was unable to brush away much from them.. which had me disappointed. then for some reason they kinda disappeared this afternoon. Maybe it was moisture… not sure. One has left a lighter spot near the bow… but much better than it looked this morning.

Time will tell if I can find my way to feeling comfortable with this one. Hoping not to change up the crown much.. I may see if I can keep the same shape but nudge up the telescope a quarter or half inch and play with the brim some. We shall see.

Finally got to open the Hornskov up. Very happy with it. I love the black cherry colour. The midnight blue ribbon and wind trolley look almost black in the room’s light. As tall a crown as I own. More pictures of the details coming in the next few days, but for now, I’ve got a chook on the barbecue and this is definitely not my barbecue hat.

Premier Nutria Quality, London. 2 3/8 inch brim, 5 1/8 inch open crown. The felt is quite thick and has perhaps a little rougher finish compared to my American nutrias. But it's a solid hat. Don't know if this was made for the South American market in Peru, etc, but has a Spanish language tag.

Kensington in grey. Stetson model? Stetson trademarked Kensington in the forties. No factory label, but size tag would indicate early sixties, maybe?
Of course it's another trilby for yours truly. 1 3/4" brim, overwelt.
No moth bites. Brushed off some dust. Couple of tiny green marks, almost like it was touched by a pen, one on the crown, one under the brim. Had some brown areas on crown, but I took a kneaded eraser and cleaned it up (you can see the brownish-ness in the head shots, pre-eraser treatment). Also brought back a touch of the blue tint, so I used the eraser all around. Still darker than the color under the hat band, but better. Plastic tip is greasy, I'll snip that out. Also need to steam in the dents I like, but I've chucked it into the freezer until next year, i.e., Monday. I'll be wearing it in late spring, maybe into the summer on nights I don't want to wear a straw.
Came with a black derby from Cable Car Clothiers of San Francisco. No size tag, but it has a factory label. I think this is 21st Century. Way too big for me at 7 5/8ths, but I've got a friend it'll fit, and he wears bowler -- but his is a modern wool number so he should dig the upgrade.
Came with a giant Dobbs box with three inserts for nesting. I can replace a couple of small makeshift boxes I use for for storage.
All for an $11.50 winning bid! I don't know if it's because the listing was kinda messed up, or just because you guys just don't give a damn about trilbys/stingies!

Hückel Weilheim "Extra", 58 cm possibly mid 1950s. The Black Smooth Finish Felt has a very Soft Hand and easily dry creases. The "Extra" goes back to J. Hückel´s Söhne and here is a similar earlier example.

Both the early "Extra" and later "Extra" were also worn Brim Up. I will take photos wearing this latest one Brim Up.

A. Trahy PLZEN PILSEN "Weiner Spezialität", Wool, 58cm possibly later 1920s early 1930s. This Stiff Felt was sourced by A. Trahy PLZEN PILSEN (Bohemia) but I am not sure from what Austrian company (see below). This black Wool Felt has a very nice hand and is very dense.

I did some searching and I found another Wool Stiff Felt of mine with the same Paper Label format and matching "Farbe" (Color) and "Form." numbers. The Forms, Liners and Bow Designs are also similar.

The only difference is the above Paper Label has St. Veit (Sankt / Saint Veit) in the far left corner. Sankt Veit an der Glan Schafrasse is a small town in the South East corner of Austria and I couldn't find any Felt Hat production in the town. My guess is this is the source of the Wool used for the Felt. This Wool Stiff Felt was sold by a shop (Ludovikus Hagens Wwe) in a small town (Lustenau, Voralberg) in the upper North West corner of Austria.
