Okay, that's a lie. I also like the color of the liner. That Cattleman's Crease would be the first thing to go if it were my hat. Is the crown tall enough for a "Gus"?

I don’t think it could pull off a Gus. It’s a medium height crown at most. I don’t mind the crease: not a favorite, but it just looks right on some hats. These western beaver hats are not easily reshaped as the felt is very firm and the crease is blocked in rather than shaped from an open crown. I’ve re-shaped many westerns but this hat would cause me to pause.

Although “double vaxed and boosted” and through a few close calls… I thought I might make it through the holiday season without a new HAS infection… alas it appears I have a breakthrough case just in time to celebrate the new year. This tall Knox derby with dimensional brim creates a bit of a different profile. It sports an Approximately 5 1/4 crown and brim measuring 2 inches to the front and 1 5/8 on the sides to the tight D’Orsay curl.

I’m not quite sure on the dating… but I imagine this type of Knox tag would put it pre HCA merger.

It's still busy and I'm short on time, but I do have to dedicate some time
to the fantastic pile of hats the reindeer from the far north have brought for Christmas.
I thought I'd start with one - if not THE - favorite from the bunch:

"Tiger Hat" - "Import" - "Fabricato in Italia" - Homburg "Trento"
with a great felt in a fantastic purple-grey called "Solfuro" = Sulfide;
crown high at centre dent: 11,5 cm; brim at 6-6,5 cm
This hat is in a fantastic near mint condition and the also purplish
silk linning is absolutely wonderful, as the golden imprint logo is.
The size tag is the same as on Daniele's black "La Moda" shop hat.
All the ingredients from the materials to the workmanship to labels
speak a more pre- than post-war language - in my opinion.
But I'm curious what Daniele - the master of Italian hat industry -
has to say about it: Surely he knows even more...

Although I'm posting these now, these officially came in last year. First one.

No brand woolfelt lords hat in black. French manufacture, judging by the size label (and the country where I got it from). I find these older woolfelt survivor hats hard to resist. Overwelt curled brim at 5cm and crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. Failry light for a woolfelt at 116 grams. These twisted wind cords we find only on older hats.

Some French makers or retailers you can safely buy a hat from. Sools is one of these; never found a hat by them that wasn't worth it. So a no-brainer to pick this one up.
Sools Pacific fedora in grey. Size 55, with the raw edge brim at 6,7cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. An older hat, but can't say exactly how old. Judging by the size label, which is the only one there, and the crown patch it is likely forties. Fairly lightweight at 96 grams. The size label also tells me it is French made.

This is how it came in: first you cram it in a box and then you write "fragile" on it (some sellers...)

Hückel Platin velour in grey. Size 57 with the raw edge brim at 5cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. The felt is nothing short of incredible; supersoft and shapes with no effort at all. The sheen makes it hard to take good pictures of it. The sweatband is very thin, but still supple for such an old hat. I was a bit cautious at first because the liner logo is one that was used by Tonak as well for their later hats, which don't come even close. The "platin" wasn't a designation they used as far as I know.

If we were to combine Matt’s ultra rare Tiger Hat with my Lion Hat… would we get a Liger Hat.

My first hat of 2022 showed up today, thank you USPS. This is my first Mallory, and it's a little rougher than other vintage hats I have purchased, but still in decent shape. First hat with a back bow too.
