Echter Mayser "Spezial", 59 cm possibly mid 1950s. The Black Felt has a great Finish and easily dry creases. Classic Form with very stylish Bow design which Mayser used often with their Homburgs in this time period.

Open Crown

The hat was severally crushed at the brim edge during shipping. The box was pulverized (most likely by USPS) and had to be wrapped in shrink wrap by USPS. I thought it was lost but arrived yesterday with no status update from USPS since early September.

The photos were taken after popping the crown out so originally more crushed.

Wow… that is probably the most destroyed shipping box I’ve seen. Glad it managed to arrive and you were able to work your magic and bring it back to life.

Very fine weave
Rich Burgundy Pug

This beauty finally arrived and I am really happy with it. It has the finest weave of any Panama I own… but by just a hair finer than The Colonel by Lamsom Hubbard. I love the crisp fedora styled blocking… and even though when the brim is up it kinda snaps to a very awkward high angle.. it snaps down with ease and holds a rather nice firm shape. The LH on the other hand doesn’t like to stay down and is a bit loose and bouncy. Just a different personality. I love the rich deep burgundy color of the puggaree. Tomorrow the travel mate in this duo deal!

No other indication other than a mark that I saw in a couple of hats found in Mantua "Qualità Extra" printed in gold on a sweatband with bas-relief inserts.

The internal measurements of this "Gran Lusso - lavorazione speciale a mano - Facchini - Milano" are 19x16.4 which corresponds to a size of approximately 56 cm.

As you see the lining is sewed with the sweatband, this is the first time I see this finish on an Italian hat from the Twenty or Thirty

Often on the Italian market of antique or vintage hats Borsalinos appear that have some quirks in their shape, color or construction. Most are "children of fashion" or of certain needs of some large retailer.

View attachment 383170 The shape is curious: the crown is a soft bowler hat, so the fit is wider than the rigid ones, the brims are straight and edged, instead of being curled.

Therefore it is a "special hat", probably ordered for a ceremony where the owner wanted to show off something unusual, or it was a shape offered on the market a few years ago.

The hat is tagged 59 cm. and its measures are 20.5x16.5 which correspond to a 59 cm wide size.
The measurements of this beauty are: flat edged and flat at 5.5cm, the ribbon is 4cm high. and the crown at its lowest point is 11.5 cm.

Oooh, that's a killer, Brent. Randy @Rmccamey was kind enough some time ago to send me one of those; one of the finest hats I have (because it's sitting safely in its box I don't wear it nearly enough).

Borsalino fedora Qualitá Extra in brown (likely Caffe). Size 56 with the raw edge brim at 6,5cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the pinch. Sold by Bubani of Ravenna. Sweatband is not the original one and likely the label went missing when it was replaced. Judging by the liner and it material it is quite early but not pre-war. I'm thinking forties.

Bubani of Ravenna is an interesting shop. It was taken over from the previous owners (the Foschini name that is mentioned on the liner) in 1904 and renamed Bubani. In 1923 the shop was remodeled in a truly glorious way. It catered to the well-to-do of Ravenna and provided imported hats and clothing, mostly from England, like Tress and Scott. Can't find any information about the closing date of the shop, but thankfully the shop front was saved.

Both the Bubani name (left) and Foschini (right) can be seen on the shop-front.

Thank you Stefan. I feel quite lucky to have found the two finer weave Panama I have. And especially lucky in this one considering the price I paid and that it’s a style I’m more comfortable wearing than my Lumson Hubbard. I’m also grateful for friends like @BobHufford who think of me when they run across certain hats.

Thanks, Steve. The liner was what made me buy this one (plenty of brown Borsalinos on the shelf already). I was hoping for a label inside the hat, but that has been and gone. Finding information about the shops is always a bonus though.

Stefan, Super find! I really like the Felt color, Bow design and Form. The Liner stamp harkens back to pre 1940s.

Knox Twenty - Grey
5 inch crown as shaped
2 1/4 inch brim with Custom Edge
2 1/8 black grosgrain ribbon

Here is the travel partner of yesterday’s Panama. While the Muse’s Panama was definitely the show stopper.. The Knox Twenty is still certainly no slouch. Now I never before had a hat arrive covered in rain protection… I was quite surprised that underneath this was still on of the dustiest hats I’ve encountered. Not visually dirty.. but man did I brush a pile of dirt out of this thing which did help to awaken the felt a bit. Now certainly not all Knox Twenty are made the same and my brown early 50s twenty is one of my most robust hats. I would guess this one to be more mid to late 1950s as dimension wise this is a slightly less substantial hat. The brim comes in at 2 1/4 instead of 2 1/2 and the crown seems a tad smaller. Interestingly while the crown currently sits at just under 5 inches as shaped. The manufacturing tag indicates 4 1/8…. So I am guessing it used to sport a much deeper center dent. It does still have the Knox logo wind trolley though for whatever reason this one seems to be for show as the entire string is not attached and is just looped around for show. I’m not sure if that is original or if a previous owner just cut it off and tied it that way. Either way it is no deal breaker for me as I have yet to actually use any of my wind trolleys and as such are always just for show for me. Proportion wise these dimensions actually work quite well for me and make a very comfortable and wearable hat. While my older brown Knox Twenty is quite the specimen… this grey Knox Twenty is really quite the daily wear kind of hat for me. Thank you goes out to @BobHufford for alerting me to both the great hats from the last two day.
