Hi all,

Just received this beauty. A "John Batterson Fifth Ave". I happened to snatch it up when it first popped up as a BIN on the 'bay on Monday. It's a peach! Had a light center dent but no side creases so I just popped a quick bash on it and took these pics. Overall it looks like it might have only been worn a few times. No box unfortunately, but I assume it would have come with the Minneapolis store's box where it originally was sold.

It's a light to medium gray (it photographed it bit lighter than it is in person), 2.5" brim, 2" ribbon, wind trolley, and with a straight-sided 5.5" or so open crown. Overall I find it very, very similar in dimensions and quality to the Resistol in my profile pic.

The only other John Batterson I've seen mentioned here is Moehawk's green one – any info about the company? Were they tied into Stetson or did they just steal his name? Guessing it was a made early to mid '50s for department store sales across the country? Just curious.

New to me long-hair Cavanaugh homburg (not sure of the model).

It’s WAY more green than it looked in the eBay pics which looked much more olive/brown. Thoughts? I’m hoping I’m not giving off too much of a leprechaun vibe.

Also, any help dating this hat would be appreciated.

Also, the hat is a little musty as it probably sat in a box for decades. I was thinking of using baking soda to get the smell out, but I’m not sure if it can be used on a long-hair hat. Any help on that too would be appreciated.

Very nice find. Green is a difficult colour I find. The shape and finish are great and it looks to be in super condition.

Here's another interesting one from last week. Resistol made under license in Germany. I knew about Stetson (England and Germany), Penn Craft (England) and Dobbs (Italy) being made under license, but I've never seen a Resistol hat that was made under license. Resistols are a rare find over here anyway, so it had to come. Resistol Majestic fedora in fenway colour. Size 58 in kitten finish, overwelt edge with double stitching at 5,8cm and crown 11,5 cm at the pinch (tall crown!). Lovely pliable felt with a nice hand. Liner still stitched in, so I'm guessing mid to late fifties. Don't know who held the license.

Last weeks' find. Hückel Welheim homburg hat in black. Size 58 with a brim at 6cm and crown 10,5cm at the pinch. Very sleek looking homburg.

I knew about Stetson (England and Germany), Penn Craft (England) and Dobbs (Italy) being made under license, but I've never seen a Resistol hat that was made under license. Resistols are a rare find over here anyway, so it had to come. Resistol Majestic fedora in fenway colour. I think what I like best about Hückel hats is their beautiful liners. This one has classic European lines for a homburg. You can wear it with anything! Shorts and T-Shirts in the summer even! Well, maybe not that casual...

That is very interesting! The first Resistol made under license that I have seen. I noticed that the sweat has the eccentric shaped 0 in Resistol, that may help in dating it. The liner is also quite unique, unlike any I have seen.

The wait is over! I ordered this Moonstone Campdraft Deluxe on Feb 7. It exceeds my expectations and will make a fine daily wear hat for me. It feels right at home, an old friend. The color is what I hoped for.

I also received a Cedar Brown Campdraft Deluxe but only bashed the Moonstone today at lunchtime. The sweat is more comfortable than my Bushman, and the felt is a little finer, thinner almost...I still love my Bushman. It's not a world of difference, but it's noticeable. It took the bashing quickly and easily.

Thanks, Mike. It does make me wonder how many brands were made under license. Even more interesting would be to guess how many branded hats were outsourced to other factories, so not made by the brand factory itself.

Thanks, DD. From what I gather from Manfred they are more common in Germany and were probably made by Mayser, who held the Stetson license for Germany as well.

Does it have a paper label behind the sweatband? I believe Cavanagh sourced Velours from Tonak and others. This is more of a Soleil. If you brush + steam with the nap it will flatten out and shine.

Steve, thanks. Manfred noted that it was either Mayser or Wegener who held the license and that they are more common in Germany. Very good to know it was in fact Wegener (I would have guessed Mayser myself, because of the felt).

Another new hat day for me this week. And it was super cheap to boot!

Resistol in rich dark chocolate (darker than the pics suggest), cav edge, and – meow – kitten finish. Kinda stingy at 2 1/8" and needs a bath. But I love the bash!

Unfortunately the sweat stitching is coming apart in two places. I'd prefer to keep the sweat so hope it's repairable yet??? Suggestions? Thanks.

I purchased this vintage Champ Californian a few weeks ago and just picked it up from the cleaner yesterday. It really is a spectacular hat and is in very good condition aside from the liner stitching coming apart a bit, which I don’t mind at all.

My favorite part might just be the original price tag, which is still attached.

Now, if I can just get the old ‘vintage felt’ scent to subside a bit.

This Akubra, I always wanted one of their vintage army/outback/safari hats (not sure what these are called. Nice dimensions on this one.....3 3/8 inch brim, 6 inch open crown.
Apparently had shield on the brim, as there are holes where something was attached. I presume it was the standard coat of arms?
Anyone know how to date these?
