The unknown Strat clone arrived today & even though I had everything gathered for a naphtha bath it is just too hot outside. So I decided for now to give it a good steam bath with a hat sponge. It is still damp in these pics but it definitely helped. The brown felt seems to have some reddish undertones. The ribbon & binding are both still pretty wet but the ribbon is reddish copper & the binding is brown; they were the same color before so I'm hoping they both dry to the reddish copper color.

This was in the mail today. A Champ Featherweight with taupe felt, Kashmir Finish and in excellent condition. I'm pleased as punch!

The felt is noticeably finer than my other Champ... and lighter, too, so it's not just advertising jibber jabber when they say Featherweight and Kashmir Finish!

Big improvement. Reblock the crown? Color looks lots deeper/darker/richer.
It's still damp this morning. I really steamed & cleaned with a hat sponge, especially the brim. It may be the lighting or the fact it's damp but it does appear to be a darker brown. When it dries I'll be inspecting it to see if it is clean enough or if it still needs a gas bath when the temp outside cools down (which could be a while). It's been blocked when wet & I'm hoping it stiffens up a bit. It's softer than I like.

I don't understand his business practices I guess. I just saw a straw hat he has on ebay, a grade 1-2 Cuenca at best, for $300. I wonder if there are people that actually pay his prices???

no one understands his business practices

I like Tim ... he is a really nice guy ... but his prices are unrealistic and completely unreasonable ... I have told him that ... he doesn't think so ... and that is fine

he will take some reasonable offers ... but it is often a battle that is not worth fighting

I don't buy from him and he and I remain on good terms

we do text from time to time where he may offer me an item or maybe I will make an offer on something he has ... but not much comes of our conversations

J. Hückel´s Söhne Wien "Eureka - Plume", French Point 5 1/4, 117 grams, probably early 1900s. I have never come across a "Eureka" before. The form of this Stiff Felt is really great. The black liner and gold embossing is especially striking. Same with the stylized "Eureka" on the sweatband. Also notice the 1/4 French French Point Size so 5 1/4 would equal 57.5 cm. French Point Sizing was in 1/4 intervals up to WWII. I have only come across Stiff Felts in French Point 1/4 sizes. A Hat Satchel was included but not original to the hat (Kötzschenbroda is nearby Dresden).

Fantastic catch, Steve. The liner alone is worth it.
