After an overwhelming hour or so in the Hatco Outlet in Garland, I decided on these two hats, as I wanted to pick up a felt and a straw...

I'm not exactly sure if the felt hat is a stock hat or some kind of hybrid. I asked for a Whippet-like hat, and the customer service lady produced this. I think it was discounted because it was labeled a 58, but it fits my 59.5 head perfectly. The crown is nearly 6" open with a brim of 2 5/8". The ribbon is 1 1/8", which is smaller than the standard Whippet, correct? I believe this is a "tawny" hat? The brim binding is a silverbelly color and has more contract with the hat than the pictures reveal. While the sweat says "Royal Deluxe Stetson," the paper price tag said "Sovereign Special." No other paper tag inside the hat.

Then I was shown the Shantung Open Road straw, but it was very stiff and not the least bit flexible. What I later found was the Panama version at a discount (thanks to the Father's Day straw sale). I was sold. And mom liked it.

All in all, a good day. I realized at some point, I just had to pull the trigger. That place is ripe for overthinking. Multiple trips recommended.

That would be pretty cool! So far, none of my searches are turning up a standard Stetson with these specs. The felt is pretty amazing too.

Great haul, Dave. Congrats!! Best (to me, anyhow) is that Mom bought that hat for you. You will always keep that special one for that reason. I still have a pair of Johnson Murphy Aristocraft shoes that my Mom bought for me when I was in college.

I stopped in the on the last two months trips to Dallas, but didn't come across anything interesting in my size. I didn't know there was a back room...:eeek:

I was there three days ago and there again today, and there was a slew of new selections there today. I was surprised. So I guess new inventory can come at any time. There were dark brown Strats that weren't there three days ago.
