WOW!!!!! This is one of many reasons that I love this place, there's such wonderful history being shown every day. That is a spectacular hat, Robert! There's some really interesting things about that hat. It appears that the sweatband seem is on the side of hat verses the back. I've never seen that before. Also, that liner has to be the BEST liner I have ever seen on a top hat. Whats really interesting about the top hats from the late 1850's through the 1860's is not only how tall they are, but how straight they are. It appears that this one has a slight bell curve on top, but for the most part its really as straight as a stovepipe. Also its really interesting how wide and flat the brim is verses the later top hats from the late 1870's through the 20th century that had more dramatic curls. Although top hat brims varied in width quite a bit through the years with various styling trends, this brim seems to be the most dramatic combo of wide and flat that I've seen. New Vintage Open Road style by Resistol. Color is a light grey silverbelly, the original 3/8 ribbon is under the wrap hook on vintage ribbon in
Grey/Green.

I am shocked at the change in the look of the hat with the wrap.
I have never seen the wrap thingy. Tell us more please.

Thanks, The ribbons are vintage grosgrain stock that I have made up into hook on types . I have a bunch in different colors made up so I change the look of a hat or if need a ribbon for a hat without one.I can play around with the color combinations before fixing one on permanently,ie one with a bow treatment and or change the width before deciding what combo I like best.

Arrived late this afternoon, 1950's? Resistol 5X Beaver Kitten Finish, stock tag reads style New Era color Cinder price 20.00. Brim 1 7/8", Crown 5 1/2" open, 4" as creased, Ribbon 1 7/8" dark jade green grosgrain, very smoothly welted Cavanagh type edge.
Arrived very dusty with original single crease crown looking very tall and tapered. Vigorously brushed her off, gave a quick dry bash into teardrop and wore to dinner. Very comfortable on the noggin, super luxurious feel to Kitten Finish 5X felt, similar to my 3X KF's...



...once again gotta love those Resistol kittens!

This is my first post here, although it doesn't feel like it since I've been lurking for a while. I got this Open Road style Stetson in the post this morning, it fits me just as well as it fits William Blake here. It doesn't have a model name, but is stamped as a second. It's not too obvious what it was seconded for, but since it has the marks of gentle use perhaps something stood out when it was pristine new in a way that it doesn't now. It came with a pinch that was a bit tight for my taste so I steamed it out to open crown and reset the diamond crease that it came to me with.
As an aside, does anyone have thoughts about the date of it?

Welcome Lecky, great looking hat. If I had to guess I would say early 50's on the date but I'm no expert. I'm interested in seeing what the more knowledgeable members say about the date.

Welcome, Lecky. That's a nice hat for your very first post. Hard to beat a good Open Road.

I'm no expert on dating these hats, but I'd say the Stetson logo places it early 50's or later. I couldn't see a shot of the size tag (one of your photos doesn't load for me) which is a shame because that could narrow the date.
