Great looking hat, but what intrigues me the most is the sweatband. Does that leather wrap around the reed instead of having a tape and reed sewn to the leather? Or is the tape almost the same color and texture as the leather so that it blends together? I can't tell for sure.

Brad, Thanks! I took a photo with the sweat pulled back. It looks like the later to me. If you want a photo from another angle or a close up let me know.

B.J.H., Hatophile, Wade, Thanks! :)

DRB, Thanks! :) I think Gus is just set in his ways. :) The only thing he didn't deliver was crown height. I requested 6 inches but he gave me about 5 1/2. :)

Monbla256, Thanks too! :) I believe the felt was marked camel but there is a greenish tone (what made me pick it) that is lost with the flash.

Mr Vim, Really like the look of your Failsworth!

BaggyPants , you did a great job. The proportions fit your facial characters perfectly. Congrats.

It needs a cleaning, of course. I find the ribbon interesting because it is really, really thin... almost string-like. Not flat like the later produced ones I have.

The really thin ribbons were and still are a very common treatment for western hats. Just enough to cover the sweatband stitches.

They are easily removed if the owner wants a fancy hatband and easily replaced when they get all discolored by sweat and dirt.

Nice find!

Thanks, yes, it's tape-and-reed. I don't think I've seen a modern one match so closely, though. Very nice!

I was in Cincinnati about 3 weeks ago. Stopped by Batsakes and had a nice talk with Gus Miller. Decided on a custom, 5 1/2 inch crown and 2 1/2 brim which arrived today.

Nice! Gus made my very first "real" hat! I really need to get back down there and pick up another one. put a 1/2" binding on that hat and it'd be the #2 hat on my wish list (1st one being a grey stratoliner)

Robert, thanks for including these two pictures. It's very helpful in comparison to the Stetson ad you posted. I can recall seeing at least one example of a No 1 Quality posted by ScottF, and it was definitely the older version. I didn't know there were two versions, but the sweatband pictures make it very evident! Thanks again.

The mailman delivered a new moonstone Fed IV a little while ago. It seemed to call out for a more devil-may-care crease befitting its '30's styling, so I gave it a quick diamond bash and then sprayed it with a little distilled water and let it dry to help it set.

I got this hat yesterday. I won it on ebay about a week ago, but it needed a lot of crown work, steaming, cleaning, and brushing. Did some work on it tonight. I rubbed 3 light coats of lotion into the leather sweatband. The lotion preserved the sweatband perfectly when I steamed the hat. The sweatband is now smooth as silk. I decided to go with a center dent crease on this hat. I usually bash everything with a c-crown, but with the high crown, I felt that a center dent would really give the hat a "natural" crown look. There will be a ton more pictures in the ADAM ALLEY thread, but here are a few before and after photos.

That looks great! I like the teardrop telescope crease it came with because it's different, but the proportions didn't look right. It looks way better now. Nice job!
