I'm still not a fan of those, but you wear it pretty well.

A rare sunny and clear day around here, and I couldn't resist taking advantage of a color comparison photo in the natural daylight.

The upper two are new-to-me vintage hats: Lee Trinity on the left and Stetson St. Regis on the right. The first two in the bottom row are there just for the sake of comparison (a Biltmore Imperial homburg that is too small and rather moth-eaten, and a black Adam stingy brim), and the third is a new-to-me Stetson Royal deluxe.

If I were to converse with a modern hatter about replicating these various grey shades, what would I call those colors?

Well, if you were to ask Mr Fawcett, he'd send you his little cards with samples of all the different felts and you could see which one match your hats and your taste.

I found this to be really helpful, because not all the custom hatters have the same names for the different colours. You also might find colours you didn't think of, but look really nice.

Choosing colours has been tough for me, there are just so many nice ones!

Thanks David, that's good advice, although my spending money is on a constant trickle valve, and I'm not sure I'll ever have the patience to save for a VS, beauties though they are.
Incidentally, I've been trying your signature tall tapered crease on one of my beaver brand hats, and I'm totally digging it! I left the brim as is, though-- I'm not quite ready for the Hollywood (though I grew up nearby :))

Okay maybe it's a little modified, but your crease was what I was going for anyway... Still, I think I prefer this hat tall.

Bowlerman, that looks great - I like the really light colour felt (is it white or a very light tan?) and the tall crown. The matching ribbon is a nice touch as well.

Thanks (this one isn't new, so I don't want to digress too much before the topic police show up)-- but it's what Beaver Brand calls "sand" I think, and it came with an open crown almost never used by a SASS guy who listed it as a derby. Being pretty new to this at the time, I left it as an open crown for awhile, and later put in a center crease w/out dents, and dipped the brim a bit. I only started to dent it this week.
It's a 5X "Classic." You can find a listing for it new here: http://www.rogerswesternhats.com/IBS/SimpleCat/Product/asp/hierarchy/0103/product-id/36911783.html
That's exactly what it looked like when I received it.

One might shudder seeing an ebay hat arrive in this box...

this one turned out OK though...

Must have been stored flat... took a lot of careful steaming to smooth the wrinkles...
