The other hat-

Western Royal Stetson

Kind of like fur-coated cardboard but wearable. No tags or stamps. Has an oilskin barrier under the thin leather sweatband.

Nice-looking hat - I don't recognize that liner logo (the 'Philadelphia' part at the bottom).

Scott - there are a few examples of the Philly banner in the Exposition Medal thread.

And indeed it does. It just arrived today, and contains the following interesting item: "Early 50's Beaver Hats -- see JtL Stetson 25."

In all seriousness, it looks like a real treasure trove.

Interestingly, this particular book has stamps and stickers indicating that it is from the Scientific Library of the U.S. Patent Office.

I got this Dobbs Winner the other day, and I liked it, but I wasn't crazy about the pug. Somehow, combined with the brim binding, it seemed too fancy to me. Perhaps a little too urban, like some of the Dobbs Steve Harvey line.

So I ordered a striped pug from Shushan's and just installed it. It looks much better now, in my opinion. I think I chose the pug colors well.

Thank you very much, Robert! I really appreciate the kind words. I wonder if the shellac of this period attributed to the clay like moldability of these early hats more so than anything else. I had a 1920's Tan Stetson Excellent Quality at one time. That hat had the exact same feel as this Dunn. The Dunn is pounced a little nicer in my opinion, but the the overall feel of the felt is extremely similar between both hats. Both hats didn't need steam to hold a crease, but when it was applied, the felt instantly became firm enough to hold the crease, yet gentle enough not to seem like cardboard. I've had later hats that form easy as well, but not the same. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about. These early hats have something that the later ones didn't, and I'm completely unsure what that is. Was there a reason that the manufactures at that time chose to use other fur sources(Muskrat, Nutria,Otter, Seal, Hare)? Was it just a matter of price? Or did those other furs have a certain benefit over beaver?

I have to add congratulations, Does the liner have an oilskin cover on it? I'm not totally sold on the idea of it being 20's yet...
Also on the note of it being beaver, highly unlikely, there is no evidence of UK hat manufacturers using beaver. All the evidence I've found on the Denton hat industry (where Dunn's where made) point to the fact they were rabbit with the lower quality ones using rabbit /wool mix.

I am doing more digging on Dunn at the moment, but the theory put forward about the G.A. Dunn & Co name being used before GA's death and then Dunn & Co. afterwards seems to be false as I've dug up adverts using the name Dunn & Co. from around 1915 and G.A. Dunn adverts from up to the 60's. Seems to have been a brand thing, the only G.A. Dunn hats you normally see are the higher quality ones.

I do agree that the style is very 1920's though (at least in terms of US fashions), but Britain's styles evolved in a different (often slower) manner.
