Great hat;I really like the Fed IV's!! Personally I'm just real nervous about having to shape the open crown myself... Would a regular clothes steamer be sufficient? Thanks

Here is what I use for my light duty hat steaming.
Works great and best of all I got it at a flea market for about $10!!!!

I got this one pretty cheaply off of eBay because I like the color. I don't see it getting worn very much, now that I've put it on my head. It just isn't really my shape, but we shall see.

I don't think this is the right hat for you honestly. But that's my honest opinion. :)

Yes, nothing wrong with the weave and colors. It's just the shape and the small brim that doesn't suit you very well. I prefer all your other hats haha,...
Brim...Saw similar that might fit me & brim may be 2 inch. 2 inch is minimum.
So many hats & only one head. Can't have them all but this one stuck in my mind for a while.

Tatton Baird that I got from @drmaxtejeda . Not sure if he knows this; I snagged it from his ebay listings and it may have been shipped after he returned home from the states.

I bought this hat for the same reason he originally bought it; because they have a waiting list and I wanted to get my hands on one of their hats relatively inexpensively.

It's a good looking hat. I like the color and the ribbon/felt color combo; I always like color details on the bow keeper. I actually prefer a little chunkier ribbon, and a more 3-D bow, but to each their own.

I have no idea what quaity or type of felt this is, or what era of their production it is from. It seems to be a well made hat, and I like that it has a size tag. I would prefer all custom hats to come with a size tag. Just makes life easier, in my opinion.

It has a crown shape and rake that I like, good brim width and it holds it's shape well.

Part of the reason it holds it's shape so well is because the felt is very stiff. The brim is stiff enough that it has an almost board-like feel. This may not be an indicator one way or the other with regard to quality, but it is not my preference.

Is this stiffness more of a western-adjacent thing?

Dr. Max Tatton Baird - Thank you Dr. Max. :)

Wow, that is a great hat!! I also love when there is a different color on the bowkeeper. Actually I like anything colorful or out of the ordinary on the bow or bowkeeper. Hornskov has done some really cool stuff with his ribbon work.

I got this one off of eBay.

This hatter is within driving distance of me - I wanted to see what their hats looked like. They don't have a store front, so I'm not sure how viable an in-person visit might be, but I've been kicking it around.

I like this hat. I'm becoming partial to this particular sort of diamond/teardrop crown, and I like when it slopes up toward the front of the hat. Shark gill ribbon, with a wind cord, which I think is a neat detail. Nice, classic felt/ribbon color combo, underwelt brim. The felt is nice - 100% beaver, according to the seller.

There is a sticker under the brim that says it was reworked by Black Sheep Hat Works in 2015. This was not shown in the listing, but it's a cool surprise, as BSHW is one of my current obsessions. Having said that, there are two issues with this hat.

1.) Having been signficantly altered by BSHW, it fails in one of it's intended criteria - to give me a sense of what this maker makes and
2.) It was sold as a 7 3/8, and it is fully a 7 1/4. The sticker says it was sized down to 23", which is solid 7 1/4 territory. I can put it on my head, but it rides a little high, and I'm not happy about that.

So, I have a hat that doesn't quite fit, and doesn't solve the research task I intended for it to solve lol.

It has a bit of moth damage, but nothing that hurts my feelings. I actually think it could also use a good naptha bath. This may be a candidate to send for cleaning/resto/resizing - @HatsBySam - what do you think? Is this something you might be interested in working on? I'd want to preserve the current crown shape as much as possible, and keep the existing ribbon or replace with like. I assume to bump it up from 23" to 23 1/4" would require replacing the sweatband.

Or I could be wrong about all that - let me know what you think. :)

I did reach out to the seller, and we ended up having a nice conversation. He gave me a little more of the hat's backstory and immediately offered to refund me half the purchase price because of the sizing mistake. I declined. It could have gone either way—I will have some expense getting it resized—but I planned to have it cleaned up anyway, and since I wanted to keep the hat, it just didn't feel right to take the money.

Of course! I’m always happy to work on a hat.

The sweatband looks like it’s in excellent shape. If you’re just needing one size more, you might try giving the backside of the sweatband a light coat of Leather Honey (just to make sure it’s as supple as possible) then if you have a 4 way hat stretcher place it inside the sweatband and get it snug. Hit the outside of the hat with steam all around brim break, and then gently start to tighten the stretcher. You don’t have to try to stretch it a full size right away, maybe do this 2 or 3 times. Keep the stretcher snug in place between stretches. I’ll bet you can get it stretched without having to go through a full rebuild. But I’m happy to work on it if this doesn’t work, or you’re not comfortable trying to stretch it. Great looking hat!

I am going to take a shot at stretching it first, and I appreciate the tips. I’m going to get some of that leather conditioner. But take a look at the top of the brim where you can see the discoloration- it’s masked pretty effectively by the color of the felt and may not be obvious in my photos - I think it might be worth giving this hat a bath regardless - what do you think?

You might try some 600 grit sandpaper wrapped around a sponge, and lightly sand it in a counterclockwise fashion, then give it a good brushing and see if it doesn’t take care of the worst of it.

Man, hat guys really work hard not to take my money lol.

I appreciate the suggestions. Not sure if I’m willing to take a crack at it, but I will give it some thought.

I have Leather Honey but not been using it on sweatbands. Maybe try it on really far gone ones but I like Saphir leather products & bought the nappa conditioner for the sweatbands. Used the Leather honey on some boots & not sure I'd use it for really delicate leather. It it helps stretching then maybe I should have used it on my Akubra Shark before & applied pressure as the band split. Not worried about that hat as it just doesn't sit right on my head.
