S. J. Fraenkel Wien "Siror", 57cm possibly late 1950s. I would like to thank Brent for letting me know about this fantastic Velour. The high quality golden brown Velour is very closely cropped and has high gloss. Great looking thin ribbon / band color and bow design. Also the close cropped Velour allows for the matching Brim Binding.

Kinda how it started with me…. When I first started I was between 7 and 7 1/8. Then after I dropped 65 to 70lbs I noticed my 7 1/8 hats which were mostly 60s hats with shorter tapered crowns were loose enough that they would wobble back and fourth when I turned my head.… so I was sticking with my 7s. At some point I decided to take a chance on a 6 7/8 and had good luck…. Occasionally even have gotten lucky with a 6 3/4. But I usually only try that for something special. Oddly after packing a lot of the weight back on…. It didnt cost me wearing the smaller ones but on occasion a 7 1/4 will fit. Now I’m back to the midway point… So who knows.. I suspect with the older hats with bigger softer crowns can sit a bit lower on my head where it widens out just a bit. I guess my skull has more of a tapered block

You can deviate between 6 3/4 and 7 1/4??? Wow!! My range is 6 7/8 to 7 1/8, but I’ll only go the big and small ones if they are exceptional finds.

Heck, sometimes a 7 is too big or too little, though I’ve never had a 7 yet that I couldn’t make work for me.

Dobbs Fifteen - Medium Brown
5 1/2 Open Crown - about 5 inch as Shaped
1 1/8 Rusty Red Grosgrain Ribbon
2 1/2 Brim with Dobbs Edge
Leisure Flex Sweatband.

The second in line from a trio of hats I will now refer to as the “Christmas Story Collection”. While yesterday’s Mallory was originally purchased at The May Company in Downtown Cleveland… the two Dobbs Fifteen were originally purchased across the way at Higbee’s of the movie A Christmas Story fame.

A couple interesting notes on this hat…. It features what looked very familiar to me as the Guild Edge logo which generally identifies Dobbs version of Cavanagh Edge… however on closer inspection this one is called Dobbs Edge. All references I can fine to Dobbs Edge was it was another name they used for Cavanagh edge before settling on Guild Edge. This particular version of the edge appears a bit different than the other hand felted edges I’ve seen. While I’ve seen Cavanagh edge of both the smaller and wider variety, they usually have a slightly less defined and rounded welt to them. This version is has a much sharper ledge to the welt. Almost like a over welt that was attached with hidden stitches or glue. A bit unusual but cool none the less.

The other point of interest is I suspect the original ribbon may have been replaced with this mid ribbon as most fifteens of this era I have seen had approx 2 inch ribbons… also some of the ribbon tacking goes right through the liner.

I would estimate early 1950s for this Dobbs 15.

Half and half. Almost as good as what we used to call a Texas red eye (pilsner beer with tomato juice). Hefe and banana juice (Hefe und Bananensaft) is a favorite summer drink in Germany.

Is the Dobbs edge similar to Stetson’s selv-edge? I don’t believe I have any selv-edges, but I’ve read on the Lounge that it, too, was glued.

The only notations I’ve seen for Dobbs edge have been referring to it as a Cavanagh edge. However their photo looks similar to this one. I suspect they may have assumed it a Cavanagh edge as you can not see stitching. It is possible the “Dobbs edge” is the method where it is glue then stitched. And the stiches removed when the glue dried. or possible they revived that name to give this option for the 15s and guild on the 20s. That being said I definitely have a 50s Dobbs 15 with a Cavanagh style Guild Edge.

I’ve seen Selv edge referenced to both Cav and the glued style. Pretty sure all the Mode Edge ones are cavs.

I thought the exact same thing. The Langenberg connection…it looks similar, but also different. I was really surprised by the label under the sweatband.

7 ¾ (62cm) Stetson 3X BQ with Mode/felted brim edge. I’m guessing mid 1950s. 5 ½” open crown and 2 ½” wide brim. Nice mid-weight felt that easily takes a dry crease; however, generations of moths also liked the felt and the damage is extensive.

1960s Stetson Beaver 100 in size 7 ⅝ (61cm). The as creased crown height it 5 ⅜” and the raw edge brim is 3 ½” wide. The felt has a great hand, but it’s obvious that this is a transitional period as the felt is firmer/stiffer and right between the “vintage” western felt I love and the harsh stiff-as-a-board modern felt I usually don’t care for.

The Mallory Ten Premiere - Light Tan
Pre Stetson Takeover Mallory
5 1/2 Crown Open (about 4 1/2 as shaped)
1 3/4 Brown Grosgrain Ribbon
2 3/4 brim with offset binding (3/16 top - 9/16 bottom)

The first of three hats that arrived together and while the other two may be 15s this Ten might be the real gem of the bunch. A pre 1946 Stetson takeover Mallory in a beautiful caramel colored felt finished in a velvety peach texture. The 1 3/4 brown grosgrain ribbon does have some age related fading… but it really adds to the character of the hat. The brim is a bit wider at 2 3/4 and is bound with an offset binding at 9/16 under and 3/16 over. This really lends the hat to brim shape I gave it with the front broke down but the edge curled up. Allows it to show off the wide binding without being too far turned up in the front. Another little tag line I haven’t seen before to go along with Mallory’s Youthful Smartness …. Hats with an American Tradition. This hat was originally sold at The May Company in Cleveland. It fits like a glove… man what a hat!

Dobbs Fifteen - Taupe

Identical in specs to yesterday’s Dobbs Fifteen except for color…. This one I believe you’d call Taupe… sort of a color shifter depending on light. Shows anywhere from a brownish grey… to a dark tan or light brown… in direct sun it even starts to show green. I don’t think it’s so much Loden… but in that vein… Loden/Taupe?. The mid ribbon appears antiqued pewter and just as yesterday’s I suspect it may have been swapped out as the ribbon tacking goes right through the manufacturing tag. I decided to widen out the crease a bit on this one. It also has the Dobbs Edge and like yesterday’s was purchased from Higbees in Cleveland… making it part of my A Christmas Story Collection.
