I don’t usually bid at auction houses. The buyer premiums aren’t pleasant, but it’s the shipping that really puts me off. This hat was worth the extra inconvenience.

Borsalino thin ribbon. A great light mocha brown. 5.5” open crown and just over 2 3/4” bound brim. The felt is some of the best I’ve ever handled. It’s incredibly thin, but it’s not at all limp. It easily creases and the creases stay exactly as it’s put in. I love this claylike felt. I dry creased it with a fairly shallow center dent to accentuate the crown height. I knew this was a light hat from the moment I picked it up, but I can’t believe my postal scale which consistently reads 2.1 ounces. Is that possible?

Here it is....modern Stetson Jenkins..... a real nice woven panama. Wears very comfortable.

Anton Pichler Graz, 58cm, possibly a rebuild or new hat from the later 1950s. There is no paper label and the Sweatband is from probably a later 1920s J. Hückel´s Söhne "Standard". The Reed covering on the Sweatband is a similar color to Felt so it's possible this was later rebuild of old J. Hückel´s Söhne "Standard" or the old J. Hückel´s Söhne "Standard" Sweatband was installed in a new hat. The Sweatband also has a Ludwig Skrivanek Graz Hat Fashion House mark. This hat belonged to the owner of the Collins Wien "Luxus Prima Smoking Hat". The Seller said her Great Grandfather, the owner, was born in the early 1900s. The greenish gray Felt is of a heaver weight but still easily dry creases. It has a really nice minimalistic Bow design. This is definitely unique / head scratching find which makes it all the better in my mind.

A local estate sale find. Lamson & Hubbard Panama. Not my size, but I was after it as it is from a local store that closed in 1960.

The double Stetson box with inserts makes up for that last one.

Awaiting the arrival of a rare gem. Stetson Stratoliner with a Xmas themed box. Seller claims its color gray with very light mint green tones. The price was no option as I would consider this the 'Holy Grail' of Strats (only one I own!).

My wife and i went to 'Shop Manchet' to buy a cool panama hat. So here it is. She bought a Mayser panama which i think look great. I was wearing my Stetson Jenkins.

You better believe it, Brent. Borsalino hatmaking at its pinnacle (and a new lightweight champion). Your not likely to find another one anytime soon. Can we see the numbers on the label (for the archive)?

Found this recently. I'm not collecting bowlers, but the price for this one went down so fast that the seller was more or less giving it away. Ok, if you're going to twist my arm...
Le Plumet bowler. Belgian made (likely); no label inside the hat. Size 57 with the brim at 5cm and the crown at 12cm (more or less). Very well made bowler and fits me quite well. I find that bowlers do tend to run small sometimes (they aren't as forgiving in fit as soft felt hats of course).

Great find Brent! I hear you on the auction houses. Most of the time you have no idea what the shipping will be. I hate the ones where they use 3rd party shippers as you know those will be three times the street rates. I have a hat coming where I was shocked it was $17 to ship. I expected it to be $30 - $40 and I bid accordingly. Anyway ... congrats on the Borsalino!

For a long time I've wanted a wide-brim strat that was beat up enough that I wouldn't mind using it as an everyday hat and not worry too much about throwing it in the back of the car for a hike, getting some weather, etc. Really pleased with this one, with a 3" brim, and happy with the bash I steamed into it. I think this is probably from the 1940s -- can anyone confirm? There is no plastic liner and the felt is really soft and slightly floppy -- a great hat for keeping the sun off.
