Thanks, Steve. True, I'm usually able to spot what looks like a decent hat. As others here have found out condition and even size seem to be open for interpretation!

Pilleus hungarian green hat. As new with a brim at front 7cm and at the sides 6cm. Crown 13cm. Really like this hat. It's 100% rabbit

Great hat and a great color! It reminds me a lot of the Worth and Worth made in Colombia hats I’ve seen.

Whoever was making them in Colombia also made hats for Bates. The felt has been excellent on the few hats I’ve handled.

The felt supplier out of Australia mentioned to me he was about to source Beaver felts out of South America. I never followed up as the shipping time during Covid was stupid long. I wonder if his source is in Columbia?

Could be. All the Made in Colombia hats I’ve seen have been rabbit. The felt is dense and soft; I’d be very interested to get my hands on one of their beaver hats. You’d also think that coypu/nutria would be available in South America.

No longer a mystery. The hat is made by the Sunemar Kalapház or Sunemar Hat House.

A modern company, started in 1977. Communism would likely have prevented earlier private attempts. The founder was schooled in the state hat factory. They work with rabbit and some wool. Haven't seen a mention of beaver or nutria. They do supply to other manufacturers though.
I think the name refers to the Roman "pileus" hat.

Looks like a nice one. Good colour and the ribbon is a nice change as well. You can always turn the ribbon to the side if the backbow isn't for you.
