Royal Stetson Playboy - Steel Blue Grey

Royal Stetson Playboy - Steel Blue Grey
4 3/4 Crown as shaped
3/4 Silver/Grey grosgrain mid-ribbon
2 1/4 raw edge brim with single row of stitching

This Royal Stetson Playboy in a beautiful Steel Blue Grey felt that is super soft and malleable. One of those hats that is just a real pleasure to wear. Reminds me a bit of my Strat with the shortened brim.. however the 2 1/4 raw brim on this one has a nice bit of Jaunty personality. And the 3/4 silver grey mid ribbon is a nice change of pace.

This is The third and final installment from the Jared care package. I would say I saved the best for last.. but all three of these hats are fantastic in their own right.... especially the Blue Dobbs which was getting some head time today and managed to get caught in a downpour... Much to my chagrin... of course It shrugged it off with ease.

Thank you again @jlee562 I am loving these hats... and really enjoyed profiling them the last few days... and I know I will continue to enjoy wearing them.

Borsalino Debrosan - SFINGE (Light Tan)
5 1/2 crown 4 3/4 as shaped
1/2 inch tri cord ribbon
2 1/2 brim with 1/8 binding on underside

I got around to steaming this one into shape today. It could probably use a bit more work. But this one cleaned up nicely So far from the shape it arrived in. I haven’t attempted to do anything to the small reddish stain on the back of the brim (maybe red wine?) but it is not too obtrusive.

Taking a stab at the manufacturing label this is a Borsalino Debrosan in the color SFINGE which is a light tan that in certain lights can lean more to yellowish. I think this type of label points to mid to late 1950s. I’m sure Stefan can correct me if I missed on any of that. I think the original store is Calliada in Livorno, Italy. This is a very thin light weight unlined felt with a decent 5 1/2 open crown and a 2 1/2 brim. Very unusual to me is the very thin grosgrain binding only on the underside of the brim.

That is a nice catch, Joe. The grosgrain binding on the underside of the brim was something I think they introduced in the very late fifties. We've seen a few hats recently with this feature.

This one arrived today thanks to @deadlyhandsome. Thank you so much Brent.
Coincidentally, it looks very much like the two Joe @Blare posted today.
Borsalino exstra exstra superiore "The Rollup". Super soft, thin, malleable felt. I thought it was going to be a brims up lid, but after some steam, it's definitely a brim down hat. Lovely hat, Steve. Brent is a formidable enabler (bless him);)

Just a quick look at the contents of this care package from @jlee562

I look forward to showing these three over the next few days.

Thank you Jared!

Oooh, nice! Santa is early this year.

Wegener "Em / 7", 58cm, Brim 2 1/4 inches, Crown Open 5 1/2 inches, 3.00 ounces, NOS condition, possibly 1950s. The greenish blue felt is very light weight and pliable. "Em / 7" might be related to the felt weight. The bow design, form and dimensions are very similar to some later 1930s and early 1940s German market hats.

Hut - Braun, Peter Braun (est. 1598) is still in business but not at the address on the hat (Bahnhofstr. 16.) which adds mystery to the dating. I will have to see if I can find why this is the case.

Excellent find, Steve! Very handsome hat. The brim flange on the back quite pronounced by the looks of it.

New to me Campdraft courtesy of @Hurricane Jack
This is my third Campdraft, one is an RM William the other is Bluegrass Green.
This one definitely has the densest felt.
I like it very much! View attachment 258379 View attachment 258380 View attachment 258381 View attachment 258382 View attachment 258383 View attachment 258384

Dobbs Twenty - Navy (1950s)

View attachment 258449

Dobbs Twenty - Navy (1950s)
5 1/2 crown
1 7/8 matching grosgrain ribbon
2 inch brim with guild edge (with stitching)

When I opened the box from Jared I could see right away this was a special one. The blue felt almost seemed to glow as I pulled it from the box. (Maybe an angel choir in the background). Haha. Seriously though it is one beautiful hat in a wonderful dark blue color in a short brim style that I really enjoy wearing. Being a Dobbs Twenty I knew it would likely have a Guild Edge Brim (Dobbs version of Cavanagh Edge). At first glance though it appeared it was a beautifully done over welt. I then looked at the sweatband and saw the Guild Edge stamp. As I inspected more closely it appears the brim is a Cavanagh edge... with some small stitches around the top border of the Cavanagh edge. This stitching does not go all the way through the brim and appears it may be cosmetic. I have owned several Cavanagh edge hats and haven’t come across any with this type of stitching. Not sure if anyone else has seen them. Based on the manufacturing tag I’m thinking 1950s on this one. The sweatband features the Leisure Flex design which you can see some of in the manufacturing tag photo. The generous 5 1/2 crown and 2 inch brim Create a wonderful profile. And I just love the blue felt and ribbon. I am very grateful to Jared for this wonderful piece. Hats off to you sir... or hats on in this case!!

Dobbs velour. Firm, but not harsh or unpleasant felt. A full 3” brim with an overwelt edge. The problem is the crown. As Stefan warned me, the crown is quite short at 5” open. Bummer. This also a smaller 7 3/4 and from the rippled condition of the sweatband I suspect it could have shrunk? The felt is a nice shade of green that is hard to capture and appears more charcoal indoors. It took my band block and after steaming it fits perfectly, but that low crown is a dealbreaker for me. Off to eBay.

The last photo shows it next to a black hat just for contrast/comparison.
Pity about the proportions, Brent. The Stetson and Resistol have the right style but wrong size and this one has it the other way round. You need a little luck again for the next batch!

That one seems to meet the brief. Nice catch.

Stetson The Sovereign - The Golden Century

Stetson The Sovereign - The Golden Century
Dark Chocolate Brown Vita-Felt
4 3/4 crown as shaped
1 7/8 Burgundy/Brown grosgrain ribbon
1 3/4 brim with Stetson Mode Edge (Cavanagh)

Another piece from the Jared delivery. The Golden Century by Stetson in a rich dark chocolate Vita-felt with a beautiful burgundy to brown grosgrain ribbon. The short brim is just a hair under 1 3/4 and is adorned with Stetson’s Mode Edge (Cavanagh) Jared was thinking The Golden Century May have been a Centennial model putting this one around 1965. Some of the manufacturing cues may support that. It commanded a Twenty Dollar selling price at the time of its retail. All around a sweet little hat. As we know I am with Mike @Redfokker when I say Support the Stingies! Thanks again to Jared... one more to come!

I'm rapidly running out of storage. My wife is unimpressed every time a new box arrives.

It really cleaned up nicely. Probably won’t even bother messing with the possible wine stain since it’s small and unobtrusive toward the back.

Battersby fedora in Tasman Blue. Made under license in New Zealand. Size 56 with the brim at 5cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. Nice shape and style and the colour is really unlike anything I've seen before; more teal than blue to my eye. Feather weight means 93 grams for this one.
Looks like the brim was cut at some point (using scissors), so likely the brim was wider originally. Seller now lived in England but took it with her from New Zealand. Apparently it was used as a prop for the movie King Kong by Peter Jackson (her mother owned a prop business) although you'd be hard pressed to spot it in the movie. It's not why I bought it. It is known Battersby used manfacturers under license, but I haven't found out which ones and when. This hat has a date on the label: 1958.

Merrimac 100% Wool - Brown
J.C. Penney Co Inc

Merrimac 100% Wool - Brown
J.C. Penney Co Inc
4 1/4 to 3 1/4 crown
1 1/8 Dark Brown Grosgrain Ribbon
2 3/4 brim with 1/8 accented grosgrain binding

This was a hat that had been calling my name for over a month. Finally curiosity got the better of me and I put in an offer that was accepted. Being that wool is not generally the felt of choice. But at this point different is interesting and I hadn’t come Across this brand and with a JC Penney logo on the sweat as well so it kinda caught my eye. So here we have this unlined Merrimac Hat Corp hat featuring Genuine Morfelt Quality 100% wool felt with Merrimac Process originally sold at J.C. Penney Co. In hand as would be expected does feel a bit different than a fine fur felt... it is a bit more course to the touch. However it is still very thin and the crown shapes with ease. The brim is thin and sharp and snaps Up and easily. The mid ribbon works Well with the shorter proportions of the crown and the binding is a nice touch on the brim. The sweat is solid and appears fine for now.. however it is very stiff and I would not mess with trying to get a peek behind it. Overall it is in pretty nice shape except the underside of the brim kept some hungry moths quite well fed... but nothing too too deep along with a little discoloration of the ribbon.

I don’t know much about this brand Merrimac except I read here on the lounge that their factory was in Amesbury, MA where there was until not too long ago a hat museum... where at the time Of the posting (2008) the curator hadn’t had much luck in finding examples of men’s Merrimac hats. I am not sure of the dating of this hat or how Merrimac fits in with the Penney’s Marathon line. The J.C. Penney Co Inc logo on the sweat looks to be prior to mid 1950s but just a best guess. If so.. I’ve seen Marathons both older and newer. So I would think maybe Penney’s sold the Merrimac Line along side the Marathons as maybe as more of a popular price option.
