Picked this one up last week, because it was staring me in the face for months on Ebay. Made an offer and it was accepted.
Mayser Spezial in grey. Size 56 with the brim at 6cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. It seemed to like not having side dents, so I left it this way. It appeared more a brown/grey kind of lupo colour in the auction pics, but it's a full grey. Steve is still working on the meaning of the quality designations for Mayser, but as a bit of information: it weighs 117 grams, which is quite lightweight for a homburg.

Here is the ultra thin, ultra light Borsalino Qualita Supreme Feather Weight straight out of its “coffin box”. I’ve been after one of these in a more traditional color and style ever since I acquired two oddball Coffin hats earlier in the year. My wife, who had intercepted this one when it arrived and held for my birthday.... Did not know how to roll and place it back in its box. So this one came out of its box pretty much scrunched into a ball. I thought for sure it would need a ton of steam to get it into a reasonable shape. However after a quick hand shaping and sitting out for a bit.. it really took form. A bit of steam would likely smooth out some of the less than perfect areas. However I am quite impressed how well it shaped without. Sure it is a fact that you have to give up some structure stability with a felt this thin and light... but all and all I really couldn’t be happier with this hat.

Im not sure the age of this hat.. but the oil skin liner and tiny piece of manufacturing tag could be a hint.

An extra cool bonus with this hat in addition to the coffin box is this instruction pamphlet that was included in the box that explains how the owner should unroll and steam their new hat into shape after they arrived home with it

I’m looking forward to comparing this feather weight to the extra light weight black Borsalino I found a few weeks back.

Beautiful hat and incredible felt. It’s hard to believe that the open crown height is only five inches. A 5” open crown in my size looks clownish. This was a great get!

Thanks Brent! Interesting how much the proportions change with size. I have a Stetson 3X I’m gonna post soon sitting here with a nearly 6 inch crown. In my size... that’s practically a stove pipe hat. LOL

Amazingly, a box came today from the UK. I wasn't expecting this one so soon.

This is one of the new Herbert Johnson Indy Poet hats. The readers digest version one more time: for a long time the correct block shape was thought to be lost to history. Between the release of Raiders and Temple of Doom, Herbert Johnson switched suppliers to Borsalino and picked a "close enough" block for the next iteration of the Poet hat, hence the different look in the second movie. Because it was not thought to be significant enough to keep (and also because HJ had no interest in catering to Indy fans), there really was no record of the exact block used. Fast forward to a few years ago when they apparently stumbled a set of correct Poet blocks in storage. Michelle, the current hatter at HJ confirmed that they had previously been selling HJ branded, Christy's produced hats. They're now making handmade bespoke hats again in their own workshop using FEPSA felts (rabbit and beaver).





So this is the Raiders hat! Although technically, at my size, the open crown height is 5 1/8" and Ford's hat was widely assumed to be 5 1/2". But, this hat is nicely proportioned for me. Dimensional cut brim measures 2 1/2" at the sides and 2 5/8" at front/back), Sable beaver felt. Perfect Indy silhouette, especially from the side profile (pardon my quarantine-Anime-villain-hair). I selected the Regal Purple liner, when it arrived it hand, I saw that it was a pleated liner! Nice touch for the hat obsessive.



Now, some of the obsessively detail oriented Indy fans aren't 100% sold, but I look at this hat and I see the Indy hat. Honestly, I think these modern HJs don't end up rumpled up like the 80's era HJs because the FEPSA felt is probably better than the Cury felt of that era which was used. Was anybody making high quality felt back then?

Very high build quality. Sweatband is seated perfect. Very clean tacking stiches, and the liner is stitched in as well. I know the Lounge sometimes has a love/hate thing with the Indy hat, but should anyone here be considering one, dealing with HJ through email was quite easy and they were happy to answer the questions that I'm sure they get asked quite frequently.

The only negative is that I would think a beaver dress felt at the price they're asking would come with a hat box. That's just my personal, quirky bias. I'm not saying it was advertised or implied and that I feel wronged of one; but, a nice box would have put it over the top. As I've mentioned, the Indy hat is the reason I started wearing felt hats, so finally getting the ultimate version is very satisfying.

Jared, I don’t know much about Indy hats, but I do know a beautiful fedora when I see one. The hat’s dimensions looks very proportional on you too. It looks like you didn’t get it with “the turn”...is that right? Congratulations on a great hat.

Thanks Brent, I'm happy with the way it turned out. I was worried that 5 1/8" might be too short for the Indy hat, but it works very well. I've seen some HJs that did look a little tall on certain folks too.

Correct, this hat does not have "the turn." Even though that's one of the distinctive features of the Raiders hat, my feeling is that it works well for the costume of a fictional adventurer archaeologist, but not so much in the real world. The average person doesn't have any idea about it, and half of them don't know what Indy's hat looks like anyway (e.g the sheer number of waxed cotton and c-crown Dorfman "Indy hats" sold at Disney parks).

I absolutely love it. It looks great on you. As an avid Indy fan who also got into hats because of this fedora, it definitely shows as a true Indy hat, and will also serve as a fine looking fedora as well. Now it's time to run it through some cob webs and coat it in some desert dust.
