3 1/2” raw edge brim and 4 1/2” crown at the dip. It’s a very modestly proportioned western. The felt is quite firm but nicely finished. It’s true to size, but needed some steam to get it to conform to my long oval band block. This is a hat that will be easy to wear a lot.

Looks well made, Brent. I like the simple design of it.

The vintage Akubra Stylemaster arrived today. To be honest, I didn’t really think I needed another black hat. But the felt is something special and I feel so lucky to have come across this - and at $US37, a real bargain.
My second vintage hat and I now understand what all the fuss is about.
So this is how @steur ends up with 18 black homburgs...must stop now...must stop...must

I have several vintages, and the felt does feel different, no question. Even thought it’s a bit of a beater the felt in my 50s Borsalino is the nicest of the lot - incredibly soft and malleable while still holding a bash perfectly.

I’m just surprised your head doesn’t reject an Aussie hat like an organ transplant gone wrong.

Ha! Yeah, two exceptions - their hats (just so long as it’s neither baggy nor green) and their red wines.

Curiosity got the better of me. I bought one of the Flying Eagle Hats that recently showed up on ebay. 5 3/4” open crown, 3” bound brim. And that’s where the good ends: the sweatband is a spongey fabric and the felt is wool. The felt is also HARD! I mean it’s harder than my Stetson, Resistol, or Stratton law enforcement felt hats! I assumed this hat was made for a religious market but it might qualify for an OSHA rating as a hard hat. It took a lot of steam and a lot of effort to shape it. It won’t be staying; although, I’ll be more honest/accurate when I list it for sale.

Thanks, the size is little bit too big. I found a newspaper from 1954 for resize the hat. A simple hat what my old uncle was wearing every day, have the same size as my head size. The letters in the high hat is not of my old uncle. The sister of my old uncle have more old hats, for ladies. She will me these give later.

My two Akubra Federation IV hats have arrived today, one in Moonstone, and the other in Dark Brown (Loden?). I have created a diamond-type bash.

The hat shipped with an extremely shallow brim crease. I have decided to leave the rear as-is, and the front creased slightly down. This does not create the ability for the brim to snap, but makes the brim appear larger than the one on my Stylemaster. Additionally, the crown appears wider as well.

I still haven't perfected my technique on creating straight crease lines from the rear facets of the diamond to the front of the crown. Therefore, it is sort of a 6-sided diamond.

Overall, the hat feels as if its higher quality felt than my Stylemasters, despite both being Imperial felt.

During the first weeks of me wearing them the "flange" (the tool hatters use to make the brims curl upwards towards the outer edge, but also the word used to describe that curvature) on the brims developed and they became deeper on their own with little help from me. Also, none of the brims on my Fed IVs have ever had the ability to "snap" up and down, so I just shaped the brims as I wanted them (down in front, up in back) and left them that way.

Looks great. We see this type of pattern on a lot of golf hats and I think it really works well.

This is one of those you know you are going to love regardless of what fur it is, the age or who made it. A wonderful rust red Milano homburg sent by my dear friend, Stefan @steur . Pictures don't do this one justice, my photo skills are not the best - the rust red is very prominent with a chocolate 1 1/2 ribbon and wide binding on a 2 3/8ths brim. I don't know that I remember seeing a binding so close to a D'Orsay curl not on a bowler. And a lightly pleated liner, as well! The felt has some character to it and the overall body is just right - light on the head but firm enough to hold its shape. I pulled the front and rear of the brim to give it more of a western character. I look forward to wearing this one a lot when the weather cools down this fall.
