Isn't made for hats, but for shoes, but it does contain a high dose of the natural oils and fats that preserve and restore leathers (I'm sounding like an ad now). This is Saphir, but there are many brands of the stuff. Works very well.

Apropos our pm conversion about hat sizes, this one is marked as a 57, and is indeed a tad too small for me. However, a turn on the stretcher before wearing it as well as it being on my head, and it's good to go.

I've actually put all my hats into a spreadsheet with all the sizes (among other data). Given the number of hats, running an average formula gives me a pretty accurate number of the exact size I need, which is 56,22 (yes, metric you guys). I could have measured my head of course, but where's the science in that? Tell your math teacher that you can tell the circumference of a circle by measuring around it and he'll flog you
I do realise that the number is driven upwards by the number of Borsalino hats I have, which run smaller than their given size. So to be absolutely precise: my size is 56 and a smidge.
Crunching the numbers for you would probably get you a result of 57 and a tad!

For me, it also depends on the stiffness and or responsiveness of, or lack of, of the hat.

Okay, I obviously still can't find my way around the FL without Tapatalk. This is not a new hat to me, though it was several months ago. It was the hat I was wearing today. Duh!

You should know that the only "mink" part in mink oil is the name.
Kind of like lemon oil.
FWIW, I use Lexol Leather Conditioner for the sweat bands, Red Wing Boot Oil for my boots and motorcycle leathers.

Thanks, Stefan. I'm quite tickled with this one as I think this will pair nicely with my grey winter coat. I thought I had found a perfect old grey Dobbs last year (based on the seller's pictures in the listing) but upon arrival it ended up being green! Can't say I was disappointed but definitely not what I was expecting when I opened the box.

It goes without saying that your Misto Maroso Gorasgu is absolutely wondrous, and initially it reminded me a bit like your hat. I knew the color contrast wasn't as pronounced as yours with the nero ribbon, but definitely within the grey family of misto felts.

Saphir makes good stuff ! I use a lot of their products for my Allen Edmonds shoes, belts, and various leather items. Their Renovateur is also great stuff.

I’ve used Saphir products for my dress shoes and boots for years. It’s good stuff.

Mink oil is an oil used in medical and cosmetic products. It is obtained by the rendering of mink fat which has been removed from pelts destined for the fur industry.

I can’t attest to all “mink oil,” but the stuff I’ve used does have mink fat/oil in it.

In that case, I stand corrected, the Lexol distributor was full of it.
I used to own a Moto Guzzi dealership which is how I started carrying Lexol back in the day.
I was talking to him about mink oil causing threads to disintegrate in my Bates leathers and he said that mink oil does not have anything to do with actual mink byproducts.
It looks like he was mistaken.

This is a ‘Super Borsalino’ that arrived the other day.

The hat arrived a dirty crumpled mess. Now After a very thorough brushing and a quick reshaping... it’s now a much less crumped slightly less dirty hat.

I’m very curious if anyone knows anything about this model. Super Borsalino. This one appears to be French or at least was sold at a French hat store. Sools Maitre Chapelier.

I’m not sure what is up with this felt. Which appears either a dark grey or medium to darker brownish.. depending on light. It is somewhat stiff... which allows for it to keep a razor sharp raw edge.. but it also feels that way in the crown.. (almost like canvas that has become sun dried) however it molds easily into shape still. Can pop it open.. or put in a crease easily. The ribbon is falling off... and under the ribbon the felt is a much lighter colored grey that feels a bit more smooth. I wonder if maybe there was a treatment put on the felt after the ribbon was attached. I don’t think it is just from being extremely dirty as the darker color is fairly uniform on all the exposed parts. Except a small area right on the bottom front of the brim that is lighter... maybe from tipping the brim.

I did find the remnants of a manufacturer label.. but it is rather damaged. Can make out a few details on it. The sweat appears to be unreeded and is coming unattached in a few spots popping it’s stitches as the edge of the leather appears sewn directly to the corner of the felt.

I think I see the remnants of either a cellophane or paper liner tip

any thoughts on it are appreciated
