Here is the calf. I am liking this one a lot. Although with a 5 1/2" crown and 2 3/4 brim, I couldn't resist putting a cattleman crease on it. I also have a black thin ribbon on the way. Thanks again Bowen! Feel like I got both Ginger and Maryann!

Damn, that color is wonderful!
Another recent find.
Cambiaghi in brown. This one has some wear and has certainly some (or a large part) wool content (I'll keep it away from the Lupo hat). Size 56, brim 6,5cm and crown 10cm at the pinch. Looks like it had a crown patch at one time; nothing inside it now. One label inside the hat, that doesn't tell us anything. Style, colour and proportions are spot on and the craftsmanship that shows what they could do with lesser felt qualities shines through.

Another Borsalino came in today. I traded this one with Brent (@deadlyhandsome) for a Barbisio and a panama. The auction shots made it look black, which would have been fine with me, but it is in fact grey. So many thanks go out to Brent for getting this one for me.
There are two members on this lounge who thought they had cornered the market on Marque Grand Luxe Borsalinos (Bowen? Max?:)), but this one escaped their attention. And it's a velour!
Borsalino Marque Grand Luxe in Lupo (wolf) colour. Raw edge brim at a hair under 5,5cm and crown at 10cm at the pinch. Bob Roberts had/has a hat in Lupo colour, which I always liked, so I'm over the moon with this one.

Thanks, Max! The hats that came in this week were all winners. The last one coming up in a moment and it is something special (to me anyway). And it's another one that Daniele pointed out to me. The man has a nose for sniffing out the best hats. That Borsalino Top of yours is a winner too. If for nothing else than just handling it!

Came across two at “no brainer “ prices the other day.

First is a Resistol “saddler” from 1985 and only needed a bit of cleaning and a gentle stretch. Some of the stitching at the back of the sweatband immediately buckled from the stretch but fits like a glove now.

Second is this little moss Stevens. Needed a little tlc, but felt, leather, and liner were all intact.
Couldn’t do anything about the faded color but even with the darker patch from where the feather was doesn’t bother me all that much. It will be a nice beater.

We don't see this brand around very often (if at all), which is strange considering its standing. Guiseppe Borsalino was an apprentice there and it kind of shows I think. Many thanks to Daniele, who pointed this one out to me, and with a little e-mailing back and forth to France it came about.
Berteil castor. Size 56, with the raw edge brim at 6,5cm and the crown 10cm at the pinch.

So, how does it compare? Well, very favorably I can say. If you wouldn't know better you would be forgiven to think that this was a Borsalino, judging just by the look of it. Shape, proportions, flange are all very close to the house from Alessandria. Even the colour is almost the same as the Borsalino Caffe colour. A tad lighter and a bit more reddish.
Where Borsalino improved upon his old teacher was the finishing though. The sweatband is not of the highest standard (a more common problem with French hats) and the liner is not fitted as tight as one in a Borsalino. But I'm really nitpicking here.
This is a beaver hat (those two beavers on the sweatband are there to advertise that) and the felt came to life almost instantly when I lightly steamed it. Shapes like a dream and has a lovely hand and feels like it will last forever. Nice thin felt and the hat is fairly lightweight at 105 grams.
There are no labels inside the hat unfortunately, but the sweatband and especially the liner make me think this is probably forties, maybe even late thirties.
I would buy these all day long, thank you.

Wow, that color is fantastic and I love the slit ribbon treatment on the sweat bow. Mesmerizing quality!

Mayser "Spezial", 59cm, early 1960s. The felt on this one is fantastic, great finish + dyeing, very dense and easily dry creases. I also really like the dimensions and form. The overall quality is very high. The liner is spot glued so this is another example of when that transition occurred (early 1960s).
