Another summer purchase. The homburg is part of a bunch of pretty badly worn Borsalino.
It was a gamble and this is the only one in my size, the others are narrower or smaller and are in the skillful hands of Fleur hatter of Penumbra hats in Netherlands.

Lobbia Borsalino Qualità Extra Extra Superiore. Size is 6, so a 59 in EU or a 7 3/8 in US

Color is "Palladio" cinta (ribbon) Nero "Gulaela" Felt is soft and very malleable with a contrasting ribbon

It seems new except it was the food for the moths, above all on the under side brim

Fleur did a magnificient work on the little holes and nibbles made by moths

Outside the moths are more gentle

This "Lobbia" Borsalino or homburg or Diplomatique is the type with "wide" brim

The proportions are: brim at 6 cm. ribbon is 4 cm. and the crown is 11 cm.

Crown: 4 1/2" at the pinch and 5" at the highest points on the side
Felt: 100% Beaver
Color: Blue Smoke
Ribbon: 1 1/2" Burgandy with a cream accent

Thanks again Steve for your valued input on the possible date of my new bowler.
As we all often do with our hats, I'm obsessing about the date of this one. The type of font used on the two imprints on the rather thick leather sweatband looks late art nouveau like to me. If so, this could possibly place the hat even further back than the 20s or 30s.
Thoughts anyone?

Moores used that same imprint for as long as they were around (until 1966 that is). I don't own any hats of theirs older than this bowler, so I can't say when it first came into use. I would suspect that vacuum fitting was not something that was around very early on though.

not a new hat, per se, but a new painting of hats for my home office. artist is Albert Kuo and he calls this one How the West Was Won. It's making me happy.

I didn't know that something could be done with moth nibbles, Daniele..

Max there are some light moth nibbles on the crown, but they are difficult to see, others more deep on the under side of the brim are more visible, (see pictures) but all are not so important thanks to the work made in Penumbra hats

oday I got the brother of the black "Gold Star", shoed some days ago. Also this one was made about fifty years ago, never worn

Gold Star in pale grey thick felt size 60

After some works in open boxes and pull down hats from the clostes my convinction is that has been made in Monza about fifty years ago

Many details are similar to the hats that were produced in Monza until a few years ago by small production units left to work until the owners, usually families, have stopped for age limits

The hat is of thick pale grey felt and a certain roughness, so I think there is a small part of wool. The contrasting ribbon is in black

Stamped on the corrugated sweatband the words "Lepre garantita superfine" that was a marketing label to give more importance to a "no brand" hat

The proportions are: brim at 6.5 cm, crown at 11.5 cm. and the ribbon is 3 cm.

The interior is impeccably finished with a blue pleated lining
A real good find for winter days

Kevin McAndrew. Not sure if I posted this hat here before. Just brushed, steamed, and conditioned the sweatband today. It is surprising to me that sellers don't bother to brush the hats they sell before mailing.
Wearing it for the first time today.

It has been inserted into my personal reserve

Classic colours and shape, daniele. Maybe not a refined hat, but certainly a well made one.

I agree Stefan, it is a sturdy and very basic hat, very well made with felt, "old type" typical of some Italian hats producers of the time gone. Very far from the elegance of Borsalino or the mastery of Barbisio.

Picked this one up last week. It did not have a ribbon (or a pug). Put this one on for the pictures. The English Hatter panama, size 61-62, brim at a hair under 7cm and the crown 10,5 cm at the pinch. I could take a bath in this one.

That amazes me. When I sell something on eBay, I want the most I can get out of it. There's gold in cleaning things up and taking decent pics.

I don't have much time - I am so busy these days it's hard to remember where I left my hat.

I did have a delivery in St. Joseph, MO a few weeks back and low and behold right next door to my customer was a Stetson Outlet Store. So I parked the truck and took an hour to peruse the goods.

Nothing. Nothing that fit, nothing that was attractive, nothing that was worth any money to me.

Then, just as I had given up hope, there appeared out of the dark corner of the back warehouse the biggest, most audacious hat I've ever seen. It was truly too ugly to not buy - and at 50% off how could I resist?

The open crown was about 6.5 inches. The brim is about 3.5 inches. The ribbon is so ugly I cut it off and burned it. The felt is 3 parts rabbit, 2 parts wool, 1 part cardboard and at least a half part fermaldahyde.

But you know what? I LOVE IT!!!!

THis is my new work hat. Good job, Stetson, thanks for a modern product I really, really like a LOT!!
