Wanted to try out a Homburg- so got a ready made from Worth & Worth. I guess it's technically a Guerra.

That Optimo is easy on the eyes. Thanks for showing it around.
Nice photo and all... but seeing that hat just makes me want to
run out and get vanilla ice cream. A favorite bow style, too. Really nice.

The homburg, on the other hand... that brim binding should
be returned. It's not really a homburg binding (though I grant
you there were a few done that way in the day). It should
be wider on the outside. But mostly it should be sewn straight.
The brim block doesn't seem quite right, either- no angle on the
edge. I wonder if this was a fedora before it was "converted'?
Definitely makes me doubt the positive claims here made for
Guerra and today's W&W. Note the binding and edge curl on this nice
(and randomly selected) homburg:

Lee Adventure from EBay

I posted this in the EBay thread the other night, but now I have had time to clean the hat (used the spray formula from SCOUT) and adjust the brim and bash. I had no indication what this hat would look like from the auction images and took a risk - indeed, I didn't even realize that I was bidding on a Lee Adventure -- but I am pleased with the outcome.

I may tinker still with the shape of the crown, as I don't think this lid works as well on me as my other hats -- maybe it's the narrow brim, or less taper in the crown - I am not sure yet.

The unbashed crown measures about 5 1/4" tall, and the brim is a slightly stingy 2 1/4". But I love the medium cool gray color and simple ribbon treatment.

This is a seriously cool piece of hattage. Wide sweatband with functional lacing. And a pull out loop for hanging, you say? That's a new one on me - or more accurately this hat is probably a very old one.

Thanks! The last number of the tag is 54 but I have no idea if that is the production year. I am checking into it but haven't heard anything back. It appears Habig used the same sweatband and liners for a good long time. The string loop at the back pulls out same as this vintage Hückel.

Habig also had something called 'Ventilo'. Small vents (felt chambers) in the front of the sweatband. (I have seen similar by other hat makers but not sure how they compare.) You can see them in the photo if you look closely.

Same features are also present in their Alpen models of similar vintage.

Beautiful hat sir. The finish looks very tactile and soft. A bit of hat history, no doubt.

Thanks! The felt is thick but has a nice feel. It has some velour qualities but isn't velour.

Nice ebay find...so far, I've been unlucky on ebay...maybe it's time to step up my searches! Mayserwgener, did you have to do much work cleaning it up, or was it in this condition when you received it?

My focus is on German / Austrian hat makers so I am on the constant look out.
Just a steam and brush.

Have to agree. I looked at the Guerra site and their Homburgs don't look like that.

I don't have a Guerra Homburg but do have few other models and the quality is very good for a modern production hat.

First post, first hat, first mod, first bash

Hope I don't offend anyone by "butchering" a hat, but I inherited this (I think 1970's) Resistol from my Grandfather and have been keeping it in the closet for the past couple of years. I new I'd never wear it, and was considering giving it away, but then found this forum.

After reading about mods I thought I'd give it a try - after all, if it turned out ok I would actually WEAR it. My Grandfather would be horrified, but I still think I honour him by keeping it and putting it to good use.

I trimmed a 1/2" from the brim, replaced the skinny ribbon with one I made, then steamed and bashed it. I've worn it a number of times now, and I really like it.

Ahhh see, this is why one must join the FL and post their hats.

I have little experience with homburgs and something seemed off out of the box. I thought in certain light, there appeared to be a slight pinch, or shadow of side pinches.

A closer exam now reveals the sweatband is stamped "Aria" which is indeed a fedora in the Guerra line. That would also explain the color discrepancy from the gray homburg on their site. I thought it was just bad photography.

Arrrrghhh. We'll see where this goes.

This doesn't speak well of Worth & Worth. They shouldn't mess with an FLer who might post their "converted" hats.

1) The ribbon actually has to have an arc to it in order to conform to the conical shape of a hat crown. When laid flat, the ribbon should look like a very lazy 'C'. Modern polyester ribbon isn't good about allowing you to do this. The older cotton/rayon ribbon can be swirled. I lay it out on an ironing board, place a damp hanky over it, run a med/high heat iron quickly over it lengthwise while pulling one end of the ribbon so it arcs as I iron it.

2) That appears to be a super use of the Stark Fist of Photoshop. :eusa_clap

New Peters Bros Custom Indy Beaver Variation

this is slightly darker than Movie(s) standard and a hybrid in its proportions not trying to look like a particular Indiana Jones hat.

Given the mysterious and subjective application of the "X" designation I would not judge the quality based on the number of Xs noted in the hat.

Portis Beaver Blend economy brim

This one came in today from ebay and took a good brushing. 2" bound edge brim fairly thick felt. Its pre Feb. 1971 as I found 2 ticket stubs tucked into the satin ribbon at the side of the crown. This is my smallest brimmed hat.
Came with a Ladies velvet hat as a bonus. There was one tiny distant photograph from the side rear across the room so I took a chance as I was looking for a Portis. It fits perfectly as its a slightly shrunken 7-3/8 LO.
