Positive role models for hat wearing. Thin on the ground?

That pic of R. Crumb has him holding a rock against his head. That's wierd.

That's Robert Crumb for ya. Weird's his stock in trade.

Now, the real question is what's he doin with that banjo?

What we dont need are icons sporting an entirely 1930's throwback persona, unless thats their hobby which is fine, but more modern folk mixing good hats with modern garb, modern suits and jackets, coats and casual clothing. There will never be a hat revolution unless its "in vogue" rather than a quirk from the past. Dont get me wrong, I love the 30's and 40's style but where shirts, suits, trousers, shoes etc have developed over time, the fedora/trilby has somehow been left behind. The guy above looks good for his age group but I cant really see kids clocking his style and saying, "got to get me a homburg." Just my two-pence worth.

I think the problem...

...lies in looking for role models only in the mass media, among celebrities, though some do pull it off. I'll third the Tom Waits motion (Rain Dog, I wondered if you were a Waits fan, from your name alone. Note mine, if you will;) )

Johnny Depp does some good ones, as well, though he's often a bit bedraggled. But hey, so is Waits.

On the whole, I think it's better to look for role models among "real people," rather than in celebrity-ville. For the Web site promoting hat wearing, what about a collection of "man on the street" photos instead of celebs? Just a thought.

I agree. I was just going to post a reply saying the best role models are the 'man on the street' types. Real men wearing hats in their everyday lives. I can live without the hat wearing celebrity posing for a photo opp.

Mind you, how could I possibly forget Maurice Gibb and his trademark stingy brim trilby. Now he did make the trilby look extremely cool.

Hi Burma Shave!
yes, been a Waits fan since the Raindog album first came out. I used to have an email address Raindog4 etcetc, but lost it. Next minute I tried to register again it'd gone up to Raindog951!!
Mr Waits is the epitome of cool.
I agree about the man in the street pics. Remember that old guy in the beret on another thread? That made me want a beret. If it works for a cynical anti advertising man like me it'd work for the average person out there I think.

Jeff.

Some self advertising but trying to show how a fedora/trilby can be matched with modern gear to make it look "not at all costume". I think:

Here's a scary bit of scary news. My wife was in the office when I was looking at this thread and when she saw the pics of you, Vespasian, she asked me why I was looking at pictures of myslef on the internet.

Similar hat I guess.
