Pondering the giant quality disparities of the Schott 184SM (and the assorted others)

But we know it’s a 184SM because of the white tag…weird, I must solve this. But the snaps WERE added I assume?
I think you were right after all. They must have added the snaps but it was obviously done by a Tailor. The lining i received is very good quality shearling and snaps in nicely but looks like it was selvaged from a coat and adapted to fit the jacket. The collar is one wit the lining and just flas on to the collar of the jacket.
There are still snaps left for the original accessory collar.
The loops are still not accounted for. Photos will follow. Merry Christmas

Resurrecting this as I’m considering a 184SM or a Longshoreman from Aero - this would be a (UK) winter jacket for when I don’t want to wear a coat.

How warm is the faux fur liners used by Schott? I’d be looking at buying a vintage jacket, not new. I’ve had shearling jackets in the past (and a shearling coat that it’s literally never cold enough to wear) but not sure how the faux liner compares?

I like the idea of being able to zip it in and out as needed, but a bit hesitant about whether it will regulate temperature as well as wool.

I'm not convinced it's a materially helpful difference; it's "slight" in my opinion. I think it's more of an interesting ability to add a little more warmth or not. It's an ability to instantly regulate your comfort, not much more meaningful in my own opinion.

Do you mean it’s not much difference compared to shearling, or there’s not much difference in warmth if you have the liner in vs liner removed?

The second one, shearling, is warmer but not removable, so the trade-off is convertibility.

Thanks - I’m trying to cut back on the punts and only buy a jacket if it fills a particular niche, so the longshoreman is probably better for me here. And that was my original preference anyway, I shouldn’t talk myself out of it.

Agreed. The 4-way capability of the 184SM design is great, but for your niche purposes......
