Pomade

So I've taken several days off from using pomade. Complete change in my hair. It's no longer falling out. That's a plus. The downside is I have been using Axe-something-or-other and it's got crap hold.

It's almost as if the real pomade was irritating my scalp and caused my hair to fall out. That's too bad. I really liked pomade.

I'm assuming that the issue is the wax clogged my pores. Do we have a consensus on whether or not the water-soluble stuff is worth the money? I believe Layrite is the only water-soluble stuff I've seen.

I only wear my hair slicked back. I wouldn't be opposed to other options like Brylcreem or Groom and Clean but from over here....it takes forever to get here and shipping. So I'm trying to decide Layrite or Brylcreem....any thoughts?

I'd never use the modern pomades or water-soluble gels- I think Layrite is a good choice-people have said it has the heaviest wax hold but washes out easy because it's water-based. Did not using pomade change your hair type? I've been going for a few days without it and mine is lighter and less thick, might not even need a heavy pomade to control my afro.

I'm liking water-based/glycerin pomades more and more...something about pasting my scalp with petroleum-based chemicals that turns me off, the older I get (and the thinner my hair gets... )...

Not too long ago I started using Vo5, which was my first pomade (I'm only 15) from a suggestion by my grand dad. Long Story Short, he told me about Brlycreem, I started using that but it was too pricey, so I got some Murray's Superior, than some Murray's Super Light and Dax. Now for the most part, I start with Dax than some Super Light, Brylcreem when I go to School, and Murray's Superior when I work.

No it didn't change my hair type. It's as thick and wavy as ever. As for the modern stuff, it's pretty much junk. It does smell good though.

Derek, I think I'll give Brylcreem a try but also give the layrite a shot. It can't hurt.

Another one to consider is Dapper-Man. It holds well and washes out, but contains no petroleum based ingredients. I have some of the same hair issues you do when I use one of the traditional pomades, but not with Dapper-Man.

Do the same - dax in red can (like murray's superior, but in my opinion better because it's a bit softer wax and stops frizziness, which I need) and superlight mixed so the pomade's easier to wash off after

Sorry to revive this thread (even though it's only two months old.)

I've done a few reviews on different pomades. Also have recently posted a little "cocktail menu."

Hopefully bringing back this thread, will revive peoples likes for pomades, and make them want to try something new!

I am a dye hard oil based pomade user and recently found a product called Deluxe Pomade made in the states. It holds great, nice matte shine, easy to comb and wash out not a real problem. I' like to suggest it to those of you who are looking for a great look but don't want the hassle of Murray's

It is indeed matte, but doesn't have any shine. I did a review on this pomade on my blog about a month or so ago.

It's a great pomade for shorter hair or parted hair styles.

Sorry if this has been asked before. I searched...I really did.

I'm noticing that my hair is falling out. Not just when I comb it, if I run my fingers through my hair I get several hairs. I have a lot of hair and I generally don't notice and falling out. Not until I started using pomades.

Anyone have any suggestions? It's not to the point where its noticeable but I don't want to get to that point.

You are being paranoid. My hair is fine and not terribly thick. I thought my hair was falling out too, but I looked at photos from 4-5 years ago, and my hair was exactly the same as it is now.

Your head sheds 100-150 hairs a day without you noticing.Think about it. You are putting a heavy grease in your hair. How are those 100-150 dead hairs going to fall out if they are being held in with grease? When you comb your hair, especially after sleeping, you'll notice more hair on your comb than usual. You are combing out all that hair from the day before. Your hair is also weaker when it is wet, so if you are running a comb through wet hair with heavy pomade in it, you can guess the result.

It is not wise to use a heavy pomade in your hair anyway though. Use one that provides the right hold without being too heavy.

Sorry to say, pomade or not, if genetics decide you are going to lose your hair, ain't nothin' you can do about it.

My Husband has said all this too. He is a barber and has been wearing a pompadour for over 10 year. He uses layrite.

Over here in London there is only one 'rock and roll' style barbers and he gets 10+ guys outside his door on a saturday morning! He is raking it in and I always feel like maybe some competition is needed to level the playing field.

I used layrite a couple times myself and think about going back to it, but it's expensive and I go through it too quickly.

Around here we don't have a big enough market to support a barber that only does vintage type styles but my husband does really enjoy doing the vintage styles and he get lots of people that are loyal to him for their vintage style hair.
I say do it, its not a bad profession. He just bought his own shop and while that has been an adjustment to our income I think it will pay off for us. Besides if you become a barber then you can be a layrite dealer and get your pomade wholesale.

I use layrite myself alot, but sometimes want a greasier look, so I will apply some royal crown pomade or american greaser supply 40 weight as a top coat, and with the lay rite as a base it still will wash out easily if needed. My barber just got in some Sweet Georgia Brown water based in the purple can and it really leaves a nice high shine and smells good- here is a pic right after my last cut on Saturday

The one thing about putting a non water based pomade onto a water based on, is that it'll slightly break up the hold, such as the hold Layrite has.
It doesn't completely break it down, but for some, more than they'd like.

I've put Cool Grease as a top coat for Layrite. Not the best sheen, but more than Layrite on it's own.

I don't like how SGB in the purple can isn't completely washable. It doesn't wash out like the usual water based pomades. But it does wash out easier than SGB in the blue can.

I have used Murrays and American Crew and I have to say Murrays is much better, it has a bit stiffer hold (Murray's Super Light) a nice shine and unlike the american crew where When I wear my Homburg and then I have a crease in my hair after I take it off and when I comb it it goes all fuzzy, Murray's is perfect for hat hair...

I just ordered some Dax Wave & Groom a couple of weeks ago so to add a better hold I am going to use bother Murrays and that.

Yeah Jan,I have noticed it does not completely wash out like layrite. My biggest dilemna most of the time is keeping my hair shining and slick like the above pic, it seems like my hair tends to soak up what ever product I use, with exception of maybe royal crown hair dressing or tres flores, I hate the smell of royal crown and my girl does not like tres flores because it yellows the linens and some of my shirt collars.. do you have any suggestions here.... I really like to keep mine looking as slick as possible- but still have hold

Question

This has probably been covered (sorry!), but I wanted to know... has anyone had to deal with wearing a beret and what the best pomade is for that? My husband is in the army and needs something to keep his hair in place even after he takes it off. Right now he's wearing American Crew, but his hair looks fuzzy afterwards and has to reapply which you can imagine is not easy to do every time he goes in and out of buildings. I just got him to start using it instead of gel and his hair looks so much better, but he's irritated with the beret issue.
