Interestingly, although slightly :eek:fftopic: I have just found a menswear advert from England dated I think 1940. It shows three men in suits. One is in a pinstripe, I think red/white and blue, the other in a check of the same colours and the third, well he has the checked jacket and the pinstripe trousers on.

I will try and scan it when I get home from work!

Ben, that's interesting. Is it a Dunlop ad? In that Dunlop catalogue of mine "new sports styles for 1939", there is a pic of a guy wearing a green with white and red double overcheck jacket with green with white and red double stripe trousers. A very odd combo. As with all those British catalogues "drawn from life" i'm not sure how it might have worked "in the flesh".

Torpedo,

I like the tan idea, I overlapped some images of the coat onto some trousers and it did look rather nice. Burgundy pants, well I'm not sure I'm brave enough for that.

Baron, I think you were asking about the color of the coat I am talking about, so to avoid the smiley's signs of doom here is the coat, it's an close up shot, you can see charcoal is really not the best word to describe it, it's, well it's a lot of things.

Ignore the tie, this is a stock photo, I have not received the coat in the mail yet.

It would look like an orphaned jacket with an adoptive pair of trousers. Not nice.

Hey, that's alright. I encourage you to post pics when you have the chance and I think everyone could form a more accurate opinion. ;)

Ok guys I fixed my camera. Here is what I was referring to at the beginning of this thread. Does it go? Or what color trousers would be better? Would appreciate everyones comments.

So I suppose a solid dark charcoal(almost black) single breasted coat coupled with dark brown pinstriped trousers are right out then?

They're both lighter weight wool, and the pinstripes are beige and thin.

The beige pinstripes and the light weight wool could go well with a linen sportscoat. Charcoal wouldn't be the first thing that comes to my mind. Would need a picture to see this combo.

I think the look comes off much better when the jacket has peak lapels. Though I can't really explain why...
