I just picked up a 1946 Philco phonograph/radio table model. The player needs a needle. Does anyone know where I might find needles? Are there specific needles for specific brands/models?
Does the cartridge have a set screw to hold the needle in place? If so, you can use either ordinary steel needles or a special sapphire-tipped long-life needle.
Do you know if the cartridge works? Usually these use a rochelle-salt crystal cartridge that has been destroyed by heat or moisture over the years and doesn't work. Run your finger over the needle mount while the amplifier is on, and the radio-phono switch in phono position. If you don't hear any scraping noise you'll need to have the cartridge replaced or rebuilt. I strongly endorse West Tech Services as the best cartridge rebuilder in the business.
