petroleum jelly?

Hello everybody!

I just visited the Besame Cosmetics homepage and was looking threw the Vintage How-to and there it say's that "a dab of petroleum jelly" was worn on the brow bone during daytime. Now my question is, would anybody recommend doing this? I'm afraid that it could do harm to my eyes....

Thank's for all answers!

Your brow-bone is pretty far from your actual eye -- just under the eyebrow. You'll probably be fine. The trick is remembering not to rub your eyes, which might smear your make up and get the vasoline into your eyes. Why not try it out at home first?

Yes, and use VERY little. I have tried this, and the sensation of "goo" above the eye takes some getting used to. But the shine adds a little bit of drama (I think of it more as a night application than for day.)

Hope it works for you!

Thank you! Maybe I'm gonna try the vaseline thing, but I'm still not really sure aboute it (I'm pretty bad at remembering not to rub my eyes).

I already thought aboute clear mascara, but will it give the shine?

Benefit makes a cool product that I have called "Hollywood Glo" This works well for that shiny movie star look of the late 20s/early 30s. And it's got a little pink mixed in. I use it sparingly on my eyelids or on my cheekbones.

Here's the link.

A quick warning, then i'll retreat from the powder room. Vaseline near the eyes can go very wrong, as attested by ex-Scotland goalkeeper Jim Leighton:

I've read that vaseline is an awesome thing to give your eyes shine, and I've also read (and tried) using it as an eye makeup remover, which works better than any product I've come across.

You can use Vasoline to remove eye make up. My family has been doing it for years and we still have both eyes working well so I don't think it will harm you if you put it on your brow bone.

I have read that it could cause cancer and that's what always make me afraid to use it!

Yesterday I tried with vaseline on one eye and almond oil on the other, and I have to say that the almond oil gave a much more authentic 30's glossy eyelid! It actually looked pretty good. It didn't make my eyeliner dissolve either, as long as I only used a tiny dab on the browbone. You could use any kind of vegetable oil I suppose.

Petroleum jelly is basically Vaseline and was a commonly used cosmetic during the 1920s,1930s and 1940s. Women never went out without a little tub in their handbags. You could touch up your brows, gloss your lips [ which also helped prolong the stay duration of your lip colors]. Its not in any way toxic. Just choose a good ph neutral jelly from your local Boots chemist.

There is a vegan product called Waxelene that is similar to Vaseline but not a petroleum product. My very vegan sister swears by the stuff.

Personally it'd give me tiny clogged pores. I do like a shine/ wet look on my eye. I have used various shiny shadows e.g MAC Phloof, and highlighters e.g. Rouge Bunny Rouge Sea of clouds. RBR had just brought out eye glosses which I'm dying to try!

I use petroleum jelly all the time as a makeup remover and facial moisturizer. So does my mother. Apparently the original cast used to swear by the stuff.
