Pencil roll/Kettle curl: How much brim width do you lose..?

Questions for either the pro hat makers or the DIY guys: How much brim size do you lose when a kettle curl or pencil roll is added?

For example, if you want to end up with a 3.25" curled/rolled brim, what width do you need to start with?

(And is there a difference between kettle curl and pencil roll, or do the terms refer to pretty much the same thing?)

I can say you would loose about 1/2" brim.
At least that is what I can see in my silverbelly Tom Mix:
-full brim = 5 1/4"
-with the curl = 4 5/8"

My black Stagecoach checks this:
-full brim = 4 1/4"
-with curl = 3 3/4"

My Boss of the Plains by Art uses a lot less than 1/2" of brim for a pencil curl edge. More like 1/4" at most.
I'll measure for true later...

It all depends on how much curl you want.
I think my Akubra Sombrero looses more than 1/2".

It depends......

Curling Shackles come in many sizes:

Here's just an example of 4 modern wooden shackles



They come in sizes from 1/8 of an inch all the way up to 3/4 of an inch. I think I have even seen 7/8 before as well. And keep in mind, this set is only one "type" of curl. They have shackles that make a rounder curl, a squarer curl, etc.

So to really answer your question, its literally depends how big of a curl you want.
