Pegasus horsehide - what it's like?

I am thinking about ordering a pegasus Safari jacket in antique brown horsehide, but I'm wondering what's their horsehide like. ( http://www.pegasusjackets.com/safari-coat-description.php )

I have experience with Horween CXL hh and Vanson comp weight steer in same 3.5 oz weight. How do they compare to Pegasus hh? Their leather description likes to point out that theirs is not as stiff as CXL leathers, but how is your experience?

I would be also interested to hear experiences with their steerhide and goatskin, because if their hh is as stiff as for example Aero's CXL, I should consider some alternatives for this jacket.

In their website they say following about their hh:

"We use a premium grade of Horsehide leather which is 1.4mm thick and 3.5 ounce. We have been working with our tannery to bring you this exclusive new horsehide which is more robust but still maintains the same high level of quality, wearability, and suppleness that you are used to from Pegasus. Our horsehide should not be confused with the chrome tanned "shoe leather" horsehide others are using that is more befitting footwear and leather goods as opposed to fine outerwear. "

I read a lot of comments on here about how stiff the Aero CXL is. Well, it is stiff at first, but after it breaks in, it is relatively soft and supple. Maybe even more so than steer of a comparable weight. I have four jackets of CXL FQHH in the range of 3 oz to 3.5 oz, and all have broken in to be a supple hide and comfortable to wear.

I have one of their D Pockets in the antique brown horsehide. Its pliability and suppleness out of the box is not like the black comp. weight-- perhaps closer to the brown comp. weight jacket you recently purchased. It is a very very nice leather with more immediate grain and character than Vanson's offerings. Feels like a mid-weight leather. The topcoat is easily nicked/rubbed off, in a good way, and shows a lighter brown underneath. I have always thought that over time this jacket would look exceptional. I very rarely ride in it, other jackets/leather I own are much better for that, but this is my brown go-to for on the street wear and travel to colder climates.

I think you will be happy with the leather and their jackets. If you aren't, I am glad you live on the other side of the world. I don't need angry Jejupe hunting me down.

Seconded. Break in takes time. I just picked up a Board Racer in FQHH that has some miles on it, and it is so soft and pliable, very different from new CXLFQHH. And just magnificient to wear. I'll have to start a thread on it when I have some time.

Maybe I should have been more accurate with my question. I meant stiffness prior to brake in.

I sold this one. As I recall this leather had been discontinued for a different thickness. Just don't remember if they were making it heavier or lighter. The new owner is on the Forum, perhaps he'll speak up

I had two Peg's. I bought TM's and I had a CR. The leather was not stiff like CXL at all but was plenty thick. It wears beautifully right out of the box. It's heavier than Vicenza for sure and as mentioned the top coat quickly chips.

I had one of their Luftwaffe jackets in brown back around 2013. Not sure if it was the new or old HH. It was listed as Japanese on their site at the time. It was really nice, complex brown with lots of overtones. Had a clear coat shiny finish. Wasn't stiff at all compared to Aero's CXLHH. Required very little break-in. It was thick but not heavy compared to an Aero.

Yes, it is not thin leather by any means, simply lighter than my other jackets. My Pegasus is 4.96 lbs while my Vanson, including the brown CW, outweigh it by 1-3 lbs.

I have the velveteen lining. I dig it.

Here's some pics of mine. CR is black FQHH and I believe the cross zip was aged merlot (it had cordovan tendencies).

Both were pretty darn thick hides. Oye. Having sellers remorse all of the sudden....

I understand, as long as they are in the same weight as Aero HH I will be happy, water repellent is important to me.

I actually wore mine today and got rained on while exiting the mall. Heavy rain. Water did bead right off it.

I've owned two of their D pockets. The hand and thickness of their horsehide is nice, but the top coat wears so quickly I honestly thought there was something wrong with it.

I've got photos I'll see if I can dig up later. But the top coat on the wrists on mine had more wear and abrading after 2 weeks of wear than jackets I've owned and worn regularly for years.

The design of the jacket is great, but the quality of the brown horshide was pretty disappointing. Also, the quality of the stitching on the second one had some issues. The thread on one of the lapels was unraveling right out of the box. Sent it back for repair and when I got it back after a considerable wait, noticed some considerable irregularities with the stitching on one of the wrists. Ended up selling it for half what I paid for it, having worn it less than a dozen times.
