Suggested reading: "Lee Miller's War" about her photographic experiences during WWII. She was a photographic correspondent for "Vogue" magazine and took many excellent military photos. She traveled across Europe with the 83rd Infantry Division taking pictures as she went.

Thank you for the info! that seems like a great book about Lee Miller!:)

Hem ...the grandfather of American beautiful models ..grand daughters...... he was so much more handsome that their grand daughters ......
In mind and face he was better...

But his mind................. way, way beyond all his family.....he was a genius...he was the best American writer of the 20th century.

here in a passport photo Paris 1920s
Raised in Oak Park Illinois. He said," a town of broad lawns and narrow minds." I used to live in the town next to it. Beautiful architecture, expensive, artsy and Frank Lloyd Wright studio.

Vaill penned an excellent Spanish Civil War literary focus: Hotel Florida, which bore inside Hemingway's psyche.:)

I received “Hotel Florida” for Christmas last year and enjoyed it very much. Then I happened to be in Madrid a few months later and took a walking tour of the Spanish Civil war sites. The front line was so close to central Madrid, it is nuts. Tracked down the location of the old Hotel Florida: there is now a department store in a modern building on the old site. Still, I wandered the floors mumbling to myself “this is the exact space where...” Then my wife and I visited the Museo Chicote Bar where they all used to drink during the civil war days. The interior looks like it has not changed since the 30s.

Thanks for this thread, Hadley, it’s a good one!

Picasso! I’ve got to read up on that guy. (Check out Stravinsky’s shoes! I want a pair.)

So... August 1944, during Hemingway’s “first into Paris” hijinks (besides liberating the Ritz, he also found Sylvia Beach and was the first to give her a big hug and tell her the nightmare was over) he also sought out Picasso. However Picasso’s housekeeper told him that Picasso was currently out of town. As Hem made to leave, the housekeeper added “you know, it’s customary for Mr Picasso’s callers to leave him a gift when they come by.” Hemingway scratched his head and then went to his Jeep. He retrieved a crate of hand grenades from the back of the jeep. On the crate he scribbled “to Picasso, from Hemingway.”
