Wow. Reading up on this, these hats sound pretty wonderful. Any idea how they compare to the best of the Panamas from Ecuador?

What is the second one?

I read somewhere that the first hat was something from our wares and the man said it was of lesser quality or somesuch nonsense so he could certainly lower himself to give it away. He must have been going down to the opposite pole or something.

Spiridon, that first hat is very much what I'm looking for, I think. Doesn't look at all generic -- the black-banded Panamas can look a bit too similar for my taste. In fact, I like it because it looks like a fedora; I think I'm seeking something that doesn't immediately say 'straw hat'.

Robert, the second one is a vintage "Supernatural" brand. Do you know anything about it? It's very light and fits like a glove.:D

Jon,

The Supernatural was a brand from New England area and they imported hats from Ecuador.

The hat you have on in the second picture is a standard Cuenca Panama hat from the 1950's.

Don't you love the color of these older Panama hats!!

About cuenca.

Hi to all,
I've known that cuencano's hat, always has the edge's brims folded and sewn. In the picture it hasn't the brims sewn.
How about it?
How do you, Sharpey, know that it is a cuencano's?
Many thanks.
Riccardo.

I don't know about Supernatural, maybe Art does.

I did find this interesting: Author unknown ;)

THe jipijapa, or montecristi, has been around for 500+ years. I just ordered a "fine" becal hat, so we'll see.

This really is interesting. The price is telling me that they aren't as fine as Ecuador hats.

Hey there Bob. Would you please post a new thread when you get it....perhaps a side by side comparison?

Thanks!

M

The weave style is brisa. Common with that hat brand.

The Cuenca brisa hats from Ecuador that Panamabob gets us the brim edge is always back woven like a Montecristi.

I see alot of the major hat co's import Cuenca hat bodies and they sew the edge its just cheaper for them to do that.

Anyone have any pics lol
Thanks.
Riccardo.
