Finding a quality Panama for just a little $$ is a real quest, especially if it's a Brent Black or similar quality that originally sold for $500 - $1500 and up. You have to be looking all the time, everywhere, to find real deals anymore.

It's just that the smaller sizes are somewhat easier to find than hats from 7-3/8 to 7-/34 and up.

If nobody else will say it, I will. This guy has been "looking" for a Panama for so long, that if he'd bought the first one he saw, it'd almost be vintage by now. Almost troll-like in this quest. At a 7-1/4, how rare can one be?
You highlighted a good point. I don't know how long Walter has been searching for a suitable panama, but 7 1/4 doesn't seem like an unusual size in the secondhand market.
If you are referring to me, I am not a troll. I would like to find one but not going to pay an outrageous price just to get one.
If my postings are excessive and bother you, then I will not post anymore. To all the others, thank you for helping.
Depends on what's an outrageous price for you. Typically, you can't afford to be picky with spending if you're seeking a decent panama. They're expensive hats, and for good reason.

Somewhat easier?! I'd wager that for every one (1) vintage lid I find in my size, there are minimally one hundred (100) in a size 7-1/4. Did I say minimally? TONS of them, at least.

I've spent from $17 - $800 on Panama hats and at several price points in between. I thought they were all worth the price I paid... I have only worn the expensive hat for pictures so far, hehehe... still deciding how I want to replace the cloth sweat for leather and how to do the ribbon without covering up the amazing pattern in the semi-calaldo straw. Maybe a thin ribbon beauty? Mid-ribbon, wide-brim Playboy??? The options are endless.

I hear you, I really do. I get all heartbroken every time I see a gorgeous lid in size 6-7/8 to 7-1/4 for what would be considered give-away prices if they fit me at 7-3/8 LO to 7-1/2. And I know it's only harder when the size goes up to 7-5/8 or 7-3/4. I've been trying to find my buddy here in town a nice 7-5/8 (that I can afford to gift him) and it's been a real tough search....

Hey Tuk:
Can’t get much skinnier than this little fart!
Stetson Panama.
“I” think it looks cool.

Yeah man! I’ve said it before, if I was a 7 1/4 I’d have to move into a bigger house to hold all my vintage hats! And your 1:100 ratio is very generous.

Ottmar Reich possibly 1920s. Pretty sure it was considered a Panama (Ecuadoran, Colombian, Japanese, ?). This is in responce to Alan's post above and on the WHAYWT thread.

Beautiful hat! If it had a narrower ribbon, it would be a summer essential for me! Fine find.
That color and weave are hypnotizing. Nice find, Alan.

Keep these summer straws coming!
