New to the forum, I found it surfing the net looking for a new panama hat. I have an older Monticristi that I purchased years ago, just looking for another. After browsing through this thread it looks like buying hats could be habit forming . A pic of my panama.

I couldn’t resist picking this one up not to long ago. I only wish it was a smidge larger. For being so old it is still in fine condition.

A wonderful straw, to be sure. I've only seen one other, and that belongs to @alanfgag

Picked this one up last week. It did not have a ribbon (or a pug). Put this one on for the pictures. The English Hatter panama, size 61-62, brim at a hair under 7cm and the crown 10,5 cm at the pinch. I could take a bath in this one.

As a 61.5 long oval, I’m hoping you list this in the Lounge classifieds if you ever decide to let it go. A very nice basic Panama!

Oh! You're starting to like Panamas, Brent! Excellent. I think you didn't use to like Westerns, either, and now you do.

It's interesting how tastes change when one becomes exposed to new things and styles. Very recently, before my Moon haul, I didn't like non-tapered crowns, and now my eyes jump at the sight of them in eBay.
And I am starting to like Homburgs, and I like long-hairs, like the Clipper that Steven practically gifted me.

My “straw hat” tases are simple and I only wear them at all because it’s too hot to wear felt in the heat of summer. My tastes in westerns is limited but some of them are absolutely wonderful.

Ah. Hmmmm.... You told me once that straw is just straw, no matter how finely woven. Just straw. But when it is so finely woven that it feels as if it were cloth, and the pattern and evenness of it amazes you, and you look at the sun through it, and the resulting golden color drops your jaw, you know it is a work of art that is made from straw, the way the David is made from marble, or a Rembrandt is made from oil paint and cloth.

Got carried away there, sorry.
I am still posting it, though.

The super fine weaves are indeed works of art. The sheer number of hours involved is astounding. For wear, I prefer the open weave of the coarser hats. I also think of straw hats as consumables so I always need a new one or two every summer so the cheaper hats have even more appeal. I can see the artistry and craftsmanship in the mega-fino hats, but they are not for me. In fact, aside from dress wear, I’d be just as happy with hemp and even (gasp) polypropylene.

Are we talking Panama hats still? In any case, there are three things that make crowns look taller: the photography, the crease/shape, and the actual height of the crown.

Chose a creased hat with the crown height you like. Not much more to it than that. The deeper the crease the more of the crown height that is used in the crease rather than making the crown taller, but since you’re not buying an open crown hat it really doesn’t matter. Panama hats are creased by the maker. It’s possible to modify the crease a bit, but the crease and crown height is set by the maker.
