Not sure I buy the “flares” theory. They seem to be moving in formation in a distinctly forward direction. On the other hand, this took place over the South China Sea. So I suppose it could be something military in nature. Chinese, perhaps?
Anyway, it is a nice, clear video taken by a pilot.

Actually, I think Abraham Lincoln was one of the more interesting historical figures we ever had to learn about in school. His was anything but an easy life, yet he managed to accomplish so much before he was killed. But, y'know, when people start claiming to see his likeness in their pancakes...

A good friend called one day and said he heard about an open audition on the radio. So we showed up at the right place and time, filled out the paperwork, let them take a photo, and that was it. Quite a while later they contacted us (separately) to give us the information we'd need to be where they wanted us, and that was pretty much that. My friend wound up on the beach in Santa Monica (California) spending most of his time baking his pale skin (he's a redhead) in the sun. They contacted me approximately two months later and told me to be at the Olympic Auditorium on this day at this time, and that was it. I showed up, was "assigned" a seat in the auditorium, and told to simply wait and follow whatever instructions I'd be given throughout the day.

Initially I was told they'd need me for four days, but they dismissed me at the end of the second day saying they were ahead of schedule and didn't need me after all. 16 hours the first day, 15-1/2 hours the second; minimum wage with a bit of "golden time" (anything over 12 hours in the same day). Odd way to spend a day. I mostly sat around chatting with whoever was near me, then we'd hear the Assistant Director yell "Action!" and we'd pretend to do whatever they had told us to do. Then it was "Cut!" and we'd pick up whatever conversation we were having right where we left off. Or look at the pretty young girls dressed as hippies.

On the second day I had a very nice conversation with actor Dennis Burkley (one of those big, "biker" type "that guy" actors who has been in almost everything but no one remembers his name) and a guy named William Michael Albert Broad who most people know as Billy Idol. They both acted as if we were long lost friends, and we chatted for nearly an hour while the crew set up a difficult shot. And then it was, "Go stand over there and act like you're cheering when they point at you."

There are quite a few of those guys in The SouthLAnd. Some of them actually make a living doing just that. Just keep working and keep getting paid. They have their Screen Actors Guild cards, so they get paid the prevailing wage. They stay in their lane. They know their role. They never try to do anything that stands out, gets attention, or otherwise upstage a scene. They could comfortably make a 6 figure annual salary on film sets, just like skilled technicians operating camera, lights, sound equipment, or other skilled consultants.

There is need to fill a lot of different positions and/or roles on TV and movie sets, and as long as you're good at what you do you can have a career in that world and make a decent living for quite some time. Being an entry-level extra like what I did is a hard way to do it--too many hours per day involved to make a living at it, at least at first. But if you have the patience and stamina for the long hours and you're good at doing that without causing problems, you'll eventually get known in the industry (especially if you have the "look" they want for a particular project) and start getting regular work. But then, I suppose it's been that way at every company I've worked for; be responsible, reliable, and trustworthy, and don't cost them any money, and you can make a good living.

Or it's nepotism. They catch you falling asleep, drooling, with your hands in your pocket. Next video, the director says, "wake up you sister, and put something in her hand, so it looks like she's doing something!"

After investigating the case, the gov still says “we don’t know.”
From a national security perspective, that is certainly worrying. At this point, I suppose my question is: did the incident really happen? Could it have been some kind of bug in the radar? If it did occur, I can’t help but think “Chinese”, although I have nothing to really base that on. Very weird.
