More great information Joe — thanks for sharing! Here is an image of the insert that came with one of my coffin box hats. Don’t remember which one. It kinda confirms the purpose of the coffin boxes was just for initial travel or shipping. (I do feel like I remember seeing one that showed how to roll… but this is not that).

That said some of the hats I’ve found in these boxes can be pretty resilient. And if you have a sweatband soft enough you can kind perfect the roll process to take a hat in your luggage.

The one I’m wearing today is my Borsalino Caesar which I use very much for this purpose. It’s a smallish over welt hat that lends itself to be a pack and go kinda hat (and one I’m not too worried about damaging). I roll it up in the fashion of putting it in the coffin box, but I usually stick it in a 1 gallon zip lock or some other small bag and slip it into my luggage. The old coffin boxes I have would be much too fragile to continue using in that way.
I have several “coffin box” hats. Some with leather sweats and two with grosgrain sweats…. Those two appear to be 60s or 70s hats.. One or both may have originally been lady’s hats. I don’t think I have any labeled “pocket hat” or “ foldable” but i believe one of them was labeled “Featherweight” That hat is incredibly thin and lightweight and would I’m sure roll very well… But for whatever reason I don’t really roll that one.
