Thanks, gents.
@BobHufford : no it wasn't a hat you sent to me (you haven't sent hats to me recently, have you?)
I guess I’m thinking of the Dobbs Homburg and the Two Ouncer that got over there and then were returned to sender.
Thanks, gents.

Ah, yes. Those were another of those times when the postal services and customs dropped the ball.I guess I’m thinking of the Dobbs Homburg and the Two Ouncer that got over there and then were returned to sender.
@BobHufford on the $14.60 for two blocks: city limits often line up with a ZIP code boundary, and UPS prices by ZIP, not by distance. A different ZIP can mean a different zone from the shipper, and UPS also adds a "delivery area surcharge" to a list of specific ZIP codes, which includes plenty of suburban and in-town ones, not only rural. Either one would explain it. With a box as big as a hat box it's billed by size rather than weight, so any difference gets bigger. Your fix was the right one, and I hope your daughter beats the pirates to the porch.Gripe: I have an auction win being shipped (which includes the hat box so I knew it wouldn’t be cheap), but when I changed the address tied to my account to my daughter’s just two blocks away (as I am at the farm this week) the price was higher. Not sure if it is because her house is in the city limits or what. This is UPS through Shipping Saint. So I changed it back to my address and will split the $14.60 in savings with her when she has to go get it off the porch. Hope she gets there before the pirates.

My gf works for the USPS and says that ground advantage is notorious for s c A m activity. The Ground Advantage numbers are easily cloned by pirates. Less security measures with the cheaper shipping, I guess. She also says Ground Advantage packages that sit for a few days are lost and rarely get resolved. I went through a situation a few weeks ago with an item I purchased on eBay. It sat still for several days so I had her to start tracking it from the inside. She asked if it was shipped with ground advantage. I said yes, she said it’s gone. Sure enough, it was. The seller eventually issued a refund but he drug his feet about it. Not sure he wasn’t in on the s c a m.I shipped a hat back on 10/08, thru the USPS. It arrived in Brooklyn on 10/09, same city as the buyer... Annnnd it has sat there until now. I opened a case with USPS but am frustrated that the box hasn't moved in 11 days!!

I’ve had packages that sat for a few days and eventually made it. I never questioned which shipping option was used, so I have no idea. But knowing that GA parcel numbers can be easily cloned has persuaded me to use or request priority mail shipping. On the flip side, the Portis Fifteen OR clone I recently snagged sat in our local post office for at least a week and then was delivered.
Let the USPS investigate it first. If they deem it lost, it should be insured for at least $150, IIRC.Ugh, so yes it was sent out USPS Groung Advantage... So if this package is "lost" how am I compensated? I know I can refund the buyer their funds, that eBay is holding, but will I need to file a separate case with the USPS?
I’ll add one last thing; I’m sure most people have never had an issue with ground.. I’d never had a problem with ground until a few weeks ago. But postal workers see things that we never hear about. She advised me to pay a few extra dollars for priority when shipping, and to request Priority when buying. Priority is exactly that, prioritized. When the post office receives a truck, all Priority parcels get sorted first. Ground is last. Thanks gents, and good to know for future shipping to stay away from Ground!!

I hear ya, man. At some point, price dictates decisions, and it does for me too. Maybe that item will be located and start moving again. If it were only a couple bucks difference that probably would be a great suggestion. But for instance, I just shipped at hat from New Orleans to NYC. My listings have a choice of USPS/Fed Ex/UPS and the buyer chose USPS GA. The price for a 17x17x7 box weighing 3lbs 6oz (I ship with the hat in a hat box inside) was $21.01. USPS Priority was $37.21. I just don't see a 76% increase in price being worth it for the maybe slightly lower chance that something could happen. I know as a buyer I'm already annoyed at the folks who think somehow it's reasonable to charge $60 or $70 to ship just a hat in a regular old box.
I guess I could look into only offering UPS and FedEx but I don't know. I've bought tons of items that have shipped with ground advantage and it seems like the post office still gets the job done, even if it sometimes takes a little longer. I've been waffling on whether or not insuring them is necessary to protect myself, and maybe it is, especially if I price it into the listing.
