OTHER THAN eBAY Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Well it finally happened… after nearly 10 years of going to the thrift shops in my area... three fur felt fedoras turned up today. All three 60s maybe 70s style somewhat shorter brimmed hats. Two of unfamiliar brands and one Rossolino Milano velour like. Being not my size and considering brand style and condition…. I ended up leaving them in the wild.

The nicest of the three was probably this raw edge Barcelona which was “Designed by Roland your Hatter of Miami, FLA”. The first hat I’ve come across originally sold in a South Florida store. I wonder if this is a Beaver Brand/Langenberg product…. Couldn’t look under the sweat as it was stiff as could be and I didn’t want to crack it.

The second a rolled underwelt by Copley Square Hats. I almost grabbed this one for its cool little Liberty Bell pin

Lastly this velvety velour like finish Rosollino Milano with self felted had band. This one had a fairly cracked up sweatband. Interesting note on this one…. The brand Rosollino Milano is on the liner… but on sweat is Barlesoni

Sometimes searching on “hat” can be frustrating:

Every dang lot turns up in the search (depending on the platform).

Col. Christie Hatman is fairly local to me so I’ll try and remain neighborly.

Well darn... I took a stab in the dark on a goodwill auction for a dark green stetson with fuzzy pictures, no size given and a feathered hatband. was kinda hoping it might have been one of the Weekenders.

The good, it got here quick on fed ex, boxed well, and is in great shape... and it fits... a hair snug but it fits. Its marked as crushable and water repellant. nice green and has the same feathered hatband like the weekender that my brother went home with last weekend.

The not so great, its one of the crushable 100% wool Stetson Explorers. with a cloth sweatband. If I wanted to wear a wool hat, Ill wear one of a couple of my old Pendletons.

Oh well, it was $20... nothing lost... at least its new looking. Im sure Ill find someone that can use it. Since my brother really liked the feathered hatband on his new Weekender, and had ask how hard would it be to replace it for leather strap the Moose River that he also went home with, I can tell him to come back and well sew this on onto his Moose River. Ive got about a dozen spare hatbands that would look good on this one. Too bad its wool... I like the green. Guess Ill have to give my green Akubra Lawson some love now

Guess we cant be lucky on the "fuzzy picture" auctions all the time lol

Already salvaged the feathered hatband for my brothers Moose River I gave him for his birthday ( He also got a Stetson Weekender and he loved the feathered hatband on it). I put the original simple leather Moose River strap on this one. Already found a good home for it!

I liked the look of this Akubra Town and Country and price was good. Hat had no size tag but seller said it was a small in the description. I got some length and width measurements from the seller and I thought it had a good chance of fitting so I pulled the trigger. Well, size turns out to be a 63 (4 sizes too big for me).

How big of a head do you need to consider a 63 a small!?

I really like the colors on that hat. Should you decide you can't make it work for you, please let me know by PM. I may be interested in it. Thanks!

Might be the color Akubra used to call Bran. I like it also.

It may indeed be Bran. I was thinking it might be another color they used to offer called Acorn Fawn. I always liked that color but it had been discontinued, apparently, about the time I got interested in "good" hats ;), and was no longer available in anything my size. I remember someone, maybe Brent?, posting a chart of discontinued colrs at one time. I'll have to go try to dig it out.

I couldn't find a single thing online about the Akubra "Town and Country" model, so I don't know what colors it was offered in. I thought that was strange - usually I can turn up a page from somewhere with a description, but I guess my search powers are getting weak. Either way, Bill made me an offer I couldn't refuse, so even if I have to shim it slightly I'm happy to have it!
