Picked up this "derby" a couple weeks ago:

The seller pointed out the frayed ribbon "flaw," so I also mentioned that the crown was slightly dented (I've since recreased it as shown). As such, I was able to haggle the price down another 20%.

Cavanagh homburg added to my modest hat collection. Interesting that the brim binding is quite large compared to most Cavanagh homburgs that I've seen on FL. Only seen a couple with this wider style.

Nice to get a discount based on "flaws," hehehe...

Great catch. I have a Cavanagh in Midnite colour as well, which was sold to me as "black". It does take the right light to see it is in fact a very dark blue. Great colour. The brim binding on yours is more a European style. I wonder what it is with the Cavanagh hats though: my Cavanagh fedora was sold as a bowler as well, just because it was open crown. Who am I to argue?

I definitely remember seeing posts of yours when I was doing research before buying, so thank you for sharing. It proved most helpful.

As for lighting, I'm still working on trying to find the best location inside the house for taking pics, but I think it may be a lost cause. Either that or I'll need to pick up some supplies at the hardware store. It's difficult, if not impossible, to notice the deep blue midnite color inside looking at it by itself. I need to see if I notice a difference between it and my true Stetson derby.

The natural light outside hasn't been much better lately either. NW Indiana has been blanketed in what the locals refer to as permacloud, and we've had snow flurries off an on for a few days now. Winter's a coming.

I'm trying to get better at haggling. I guess it's a somewhat un-American thing to do. We're just so ingrained at seeing and paying sticker price. My wife is much better, or more comfortable doing it, than I am because she does it all the time at garage sales.

The fact the seller pointed out the frayed ribbon provided me enough motivation to see if I could get any more concessions. That much savings = that much more available for the next one. The hunt continues!

Strange that suddenly a few of these Stetson Excellent German license hats have been showing up. Not that anyone is complaining.

Thanks, Brent. I have noticed that before in these vintage shops: suddenly there are plenty of hats of one particular brand or one particular store to be found. I'm not complaining.
