OTHER THAN eBAY Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

The $13 Strat with the two mystery hats arrived and I unboxed them early this morning when I got back in town. The Stratoliner is pretty decent, but has obviously been worn (all the hats had wear and dirt/debris).

I wore it to work this morning and it's probably gonna be a "fresh haircut" hat at 7-3/8 LO.

One hat mystery was solved and I'm very happy to have it -- a Dobbs 20 Gay Prince -- and it seemed to fit with a quick try (even though it is marked 7-1/4). It suffered a popped stitch due to the third-party shipper nesting the hats so tight. I could barely get them apart.

Weird stitch in the liner (not through the felt).

Burley is the color.

The third hat remains a mystery. No liner or sweat imprint and nothing behind the sweatband either. Just a store embossment. Pretty nice felt though and probably in the true 7-1/4 range so it will move on. The ribbon was wrinkled in the stack on this one too.

Haven't found anything on this "store" so far.

Wow. Nice hits there Bob. Gay prince is one of the more special felts I’ve come across. How about this one ?

Thanks Joe! From what little I handled it, it did appear nice. I'll brush it out this evening and report back. The Strat fit better after I removed a couple of sizing strips from behind the sweat.

Here are the stamps / stickers ... (late-'40s/early-mid-50s?)

Nice details.

my GP was my first experience with a felt you could “blow a crease into”. Just different from felts I had handled before. I should pull it back out and see how it stacks up to some of the things I found this past year.

Three absolute winners! Bummer about the poor packaging. I’ll confess that the mystery hat is my favorite: Cavanagh edges are the best.

Had the occasion to visit this venue yesterday after a two hour drive for some other business. While there were a few good vintage hats nestled among the menagerie, sadly none fit my needs, taste, or head. Much to my chagrin, I left empty-handed, or rather, empty-headed.
No way I could have walked away from that pile without at least buying one.;)
