OTB and Horse Racing

Watching men in suits hanging around the OTBs in NYC, drunk and desperate. (Also long ago.)

My grandfather would've been one of those men, except not drunk. He, like me, loved the OTB. He even had a telephone account, used through a credit-like card called the "Gold Card." OTB was created in 1970 and my grandfather passed away in 1975, so he must've gotten it right when it first started.

Well, I'm in the privileged position to own a few horses. As far as I know for Western Europe betting is done directly at the tracks (like to do this myself as well ). Usually my horses race in Germany and France so I don't know about other countries. (In the Netherlands only very little is left of the once glorious horse racing days...)
I guess OTB is a popular way to bet in the United States right?

P.S. I was talking about harness racing...

I've only been to the track a few times, and only once to bet. Today, I woke up very early and went to Santa Anita, where I met with a group of photographers. The five of us spent a few hours taking pictures of the horses and jockeys during training. Here are a few of my shots.

I wish the infield had been open, because that would have put the sun behind me and the grand stands behind the horses. That would have made for some more interesting images.

Horses are beautiful animals. I should watch more westerns. lol

Off Track Betting

Here in Southern California, we don't have OTB offices. However I can go to Santa Anita and bet on other tracks even when Santa Anita is running.

When in Las Vegas, if the casino is large enough to have a sports book, they'll have race track betting there.

For me, I rather go to the track when they are running and actually see the horses. Call me sentimental.

If you go to the track, the program has a page or two explaning all of the terms for betting and the terms for giving the history of the horse and the jockey.

As for myself, I usually get a paper like the racing form or local paper and look at who is the favorites from the various writers and put some money on one or two of the picks to SHOW. If time and funds are ok I will expand the betting now and again to included a longshot for one of the races.

I had a friend that got a hot tip once and bet at OTB, it came in and he won enough to help pay for his first (used) car.

HUUUUUUGE racing fan since I was about 8 or 9. I used to tape televised races and keep a library of articles and such. I was addicted

May I recommend "Rio Grande", "Fort Apache", "The Horse Soldiers" and, although not a western, "The Quiet Man", all directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne. All feature some of the best horsemanship and cinematography in films.
