Who do you think got it right and who was clueless? I saw more sleeves that were way to long and trousers bunched around ankles to mention.

The best:

The worst:

2008_MooreM_01.jpg

What IS that sticking out of his sleeve?

The Best dressed woman would be hard to say...but I will go with Rene:

She passed on black or red for this silver number. The lines are almost art deco.

What say you?

I played the game "who ties their own bow?". Daniel Day Lewis did, so did a few others.

I swear, I am exciting human being!

It's interesting comparing our good/bad and the press' good/bad. "They" had Daniel Day Lewis and Viggo as a bad (the brown edge to the lapels, hoop earrings; too long of a coat, too many accessories). At least the article on AOL did. I'm quite sure we'll see another spread where they are good. lol

It seemed like there was more good than bad. I was really glad to see the return of the bow tie with a tuxedo. It looked classic and proper.

I personally detest a "neck tie" with formal wear. Hollywood has beat that look to death. I'm glad it's fading.

There were too many bads to mention so I will stick to the good.

I agree that Clooney is a very classy guy. I do wish he would shorten his sleeves enough to show a little cuff though. Nevertheless he as always is head and shoulders above most of his peers.

Daniel though.....I just am not hip to his must-wear-bad-shoes look. Brown suede shoes with black tie?

I will pass on commenting on the trousers. Depp has been trying to pull off the bad shoes thing lately too....though not this time.

I thought Daniel's wife looked awful. That dress was a sin and a shame.

Herewith my picks:

The Best

helen_miren.jpg

Helen Mirren--when she walked upstage to present my jaw literally dropped she looked so wonderful. Someone with less presence could easily have been overwhlemed by that dress but she carried it off superbly. Daniel Day-Lewis was correct to kneel.

marion_cotillard.jpg

Marion Cotillard--hair, makeup, dress--her whole look was great.

laura_linney.jpg

Laura Linney--classic elegance. I love her hair.

2008_DeppJ_01.jpg

No, not him! Vanessa Paradis--goth tinged glamor at its best.

2008_DiddyP_01.jpg

P. Diddy--love the studs and the vest.

Jon Stewart--I couldn't find a good picture of him but I thought he looked great last night; finally, a suit that fits him after those monstrosities he wears on The Daily Show. Steve Carell looked very sharp too.

2008_DanoP_01.jpg

Paul Dano--I really like this jacket--are those darts at the front?

The Worst

2008_LewisD_01.jpg

Rebecca Miller--this dress looked like a craft project to me, and what are those shoes? They look like the Wicked Witch of the East's stockings! I'm not wild about Mr. Day-Lewis' look either.

2008_SwintonT_01.jpg

Tilda Swinton--She's so striking it's a shame she made such a shapeless choice.

2008_RonanS_02.jpg

Saoirse Ronan--again, I loved her work but this color isn't flattering and the dress is too old for her; it says "bad bridesmaid's dress" to me loud and clear.

2008_HudsonJ_01.jpg

Jennifer Hudson--she's looked beautiful in the past but this was just a miss for me--really unflattering (and, gosh it looks uncomfortable!)

2008_FarrellC_01.jpg

Colin Farrell--this is one of the worst fitting suits I've ever seen and his hair; don't get me started on his hair! The woman he's escorting looks fabulous though!

2008_HoffmanP_01.jpg

Phillip S. Hoffman--great actor, awful dresser.

They sure are; most men's jackets are darted.

Thanks Tomasso--these darts jumped out at me. Probably because the fabric has a sheen. I like the design element they add. I'm no expert on men's formal wear but I like the proportion of the bow tie to the jacket collar and "v" of shirt showing (I know there's a technical term for this but I'm fried, please forgive me)

My shirtmaker refers to this area as the V-Zone, though I'm not to sure that many people (outside of Charvet clients) are hip to the term.

you'd think he was staggering home after a long nite out, not just arriving on the redcarpet...

And someone in the crowd handed him a tie they'd had wadded up in their back pocket for a few days because without any tie he'd just look stupid, but with a wadded up tie, he'd at least look like he knew he was supposed to dress up a bit...

RE: Daniel-Day Lewis - also notice the length of the pants, especially the um...blossoming left cuff...

Is it me, (answering self: no, of course not, because we're all noticing the same sort of things!), or does it seem like the Hollywood crowd can hire people to do almost anything they want done except find decent clothes? Do these people or their fashion co-ordinators have any concept of what a tailor is or does?
