Opinion requested - windowpane blazer

I'm on the fence about ordering this J. Peterman windowpane plaid blazer. The color appears to be a medium tan with black/blue windowpane detailing. Of course the lack of photos is a problem, but any opinions on it based on the sketch?

I actually like it. It would go with tan or navy slacks. I'm one who usually doesn't go for mixing browns and blues, but that one did catchnmy eye. For some reason, I immediately pictured Bing Crosby wearing it when I first saw it.

And I have to agree - lack of photos and having to rely on drawings holds me back on a lot of possible Peterman purchases.

One thing to consider about bold patterns/colors is the frequency which you intend to wear the garment as they tend to be memorable to others and thus cannot be repeated in a outfit rotation as often as more muted garments. That's if you even care about such matters. Now, if it wouldn't bother you to be known as 'the guy in the plaid jacket', then disregard the previous. Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable wearing that jacket more than once or twice a month.

I have to agree with Tomasso here,

I have a flecked 50s sport coat that people always ask, "didn't you wear that last week?" The answer was no, but people remember.

Having said that, oh yeah, that's a fine coat. Navy pants would work just dandy, but dark brown slacks would make the outfit.

I like it, it's hard to find a checkered or plaid one that doesn't scream 'used car salesman' but this is very classy.

Anyway, I talked to J. Peterman, and the sizing of this jacket is the same as the Herringbone tweed suit coat I had to return. A nice product, but it's cut for a young slim person, which I ain't. I went up a size to allow the jacket to close, but it was then too wide in the shoulders, which is too much to deal with in a simple alteration.

In the meantime, at Syms I found a beautiful 3-button sport jacket in a darkish taupe color, made of 85% cashmere and 15% mink(!). It's ridiculously fuzzy and soft, like a silk-finish hat - it feels like I'm wearing a cat. It will be great once I have the double vents closed up. So for now the windowpane blazer goes by the wayside.

I think I'm giving this blazer a "two thumbs up". I am not that good at mixing up colors so I want to ask what type of trousers you are going to pair that up with.

The plan was to wear it with dark brown, navy or charcoal trousers. But the cut of the jacket didn't suit me, so I didn't buy it.
I also had a concern that it might, in fact, look like a blanket, rather than cool and retro, LOL.

Funny you should mention that because sartorial aficionados (aka dandies) call them horse blanket jackets.

Good decision. These bold windowpanes are best avoided by those of us who have a bit extra at the waistline. We look like a horse (and blanket).

I can't say I'm a huge fan of it but I'm not entirely opposed to plaid blazers, given they're executed tastefully. That one just seems a little loud in its design. Kevin Hearn of Barenaked Ladies seems to wear this plaid, three-button blazer at quite a few of their concerts I've been to. I like the fact that it's a little more muted.

It's J Peterman. Get it, and try it on. Without seeing it on, it's impossible to know. Then post the picture of you wearing it. We'll all be able to tell how it looks. If you don't like it, back it goes.

the jacket immediately struck me as a Great Gatsby roaring 20's look, which to me, is good for the special occasion, like a dance, or that Governors island jazz festival, a vintage car event, playing cards with the guys, but for anything approximating a 'normal' day at the office, forget it, unless of course you manage a theater, or sell radio station ads. Personally I like it, but I already have a couple eccentric sport jackets that could use more action.

Too bad, because I think that if one turns down the volume on the rest of the outfit then an otherwise loud jacket like this can totally work. With those navy trousers you mentioned, and a white shirt and navy tie, I think this would have been really cool. Or even black trousers and black tie.
