Some one used the term, Hataholic. Now to me, it fits and fits so many of us, like two peas in a pod fits us. Being bitten by the hat bug is something hard to convey to those that have not yet had it happen to them.

Wearing the hats is a part of it, but it is deeper than that. Far deeper. You see...you want...it gets worse....some folks can crave a plate of cake and pie...and they order it and go about their day....but no...not us.

We see another hat, even one that is "owned" by someone else...and what do we do? Dream of it...want it...lust for it...hope some way, some how we will see it for sale, and on sale if possible for a discount!

Wear the hat. It is a "fitting curse". Pun intended.

I hate to admit it, but I once went swimming in a Panama.
I know, I'm awful, but in my own defense, this was 30 years ago and back then you could pick up a used Panama at any thrift store for next to nothing, which I had and I was wearing it at a friend's swim party at his apartment complex. It was a narrow brim, well worn Panama ... but the straw was unbroken.

Anyway, for some reason I cannot now fathom, I jumped in with the hat on and kept it one the rest of the afternoon.
It was pretty well shot by the end of the day.
I had about three more Panamas, a leghorn and others ... all of which have been long since worn out.

To answer your original question, however, yes. I can remember a day when I wanted to leave the house without a hat.
It was November, 1964 and I had a 104 degree fever from tonsilitis. I blame the fever.
Every other day that I can recall, from the middle of the 1950s through today, I wanted to wear a hat.

EVERY other day.

Never not wanted to wear a hat, but more than once I have been pre-occupied and forgot.
Just this morning, I left the apartment, locked the door, and was about a half-dozen steps down the hall when I realized something didn't feel right. I had forgotten my hat. So retrace my steps, get my keys back out, etc.

But then everything felt "right".

Much of what we wear is what we become used to. In addition to a fedora, I don't go anywhere without my photo vest and my shoulder bag, mainly due to all the junk I have to carry due primarily to my diabetes. So because I need lotsa places to carry things, I found what works best for me while looking the way I want it to look.

I once forgot to put on a hat when going out for dinner with a couple of friends:eusa_doh:. After exiting the car at the restaurant I was blinded by the sun, then asked my friends how they could stand NOT wearing a hat.

It really is beyond me why more people don't use this stylish yet functional accessery[huh].

It's just habit. There's no right or wrong of whether to wear a hat or not. There's simply personal choice.
